1. They look at the 5 years preceding the date of your application. Say you submit your application on March 1, 2021, count backwards to 5 years.
2. I believe you can apply for renewal 6 or 9 months before your PR card's expiration.
3. It is a Residency Obligation to be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in order to meet RO.

I would honestly suggest to complete 4 years and apply for citizenship. You have plenty of time especially once new Bill take into effect.

Thanx a lot.
But i m confused about the period to b counted of 5 yrs. As one of the members earlier wrote that they count 5 yrs from the date of landing and not back when u apply. Pl make it sure so that i plan accordingly. More members with experience of this type may kindly help.

2. What is this new bill u mentioned in the end. Pl tell.
Thanx.

The first renewal is based on the five years from date of becoming a PR (the date you land). After the first renewal, the RO is based on the five years prior o the date of renewal or arrival in Canada. You must have at least 2 years residence at any point in the second (and any following) 5 year period. Any time in Canada beyond the 5previous years is not counted.

What if you have been a PR for more than 5 years but haven't renewed for personal reasons? Will it still be the first 5 years since becoming a PR?

As per CIC website, if you have been a PR for 5 years or more, then they will look at the preceding 5 years from date of application.

If you have been a PR for over 5 years, then any request for a PR card, the dates looked at will be the 5 years before the day you requested it.

That's what I thought. Regardless if it's first renewal or second, they will always look at the preceding 5 years from date of application. Because I know some people who have been PRs for around 10 yrs and never renewed just because they never needed it. If they decide to renew (in that case his first renewal), I don't think IRCC will look into his first 5 yrs since becoming a PR.
