Low gpa masters

Hello everyone

Im planning to get a masters degree in Canada (MBA or management of human resources)

I graduated with a gpa of 2.71 (Management)

Is there a chance that any good university will accept me, not talking about the top university, because i know they wont accept me, but at least a decent university.

Help me please.

If you can get a GMAT score of above 550 you can definitely get an admit in a top university. MBA admissions depend on overall profile strength. Your work experience and a 550+ GMAT can definitely get you an admit in a good university! Don't forget an IELTS of 7 and above and no less than 6.5 in each section or a TOEFL of 100 above is the minimum requirement.

You can always go for tier 3 MBAs that is Vancouver Island, UCW etc. But they are not very well reputed programs and do not need a GMAT score.

If you are not keen to take the GMAT exam you can also look at the MoM program from UWindsor.

I graduated two months ago and working as property coordinator in real estate company (Dubai) for a year now, but it's not my major anyway, will it help me ?

And for the GMAT, if i got 550+ it will make easier to get accepted even though my gpa is 2.71?

Definitely with a 550+ you will get into a good university. You can check these universities as they generally accept a 550+ irrespective of GPAs:

Memorial University
Saint Marys Sobey School
University of New brunswick
University of Manitoba (they have country wise GPA conversion cutoffs check this on google)
University of Regina
Lakehead University

Since your work experience is less these are the universities i can suggest for now. If you have a 3+ years of work experience, your chances of a top 10 ranked university is good with strong GMAT scores.

I would give my 2 cents. GPA of 2.71 automatically disqualifies a student from the top MBA. GPA, work experience, recommendation letters are all equally important to get in a strong program. Getting a GMAT of 550+ will not "definitely" get you into a top school but it will help you to get into a decent school. To understand where you stand, take a look at the top MBA programs. In Canada they are: 1) Rotman - University of Toronto; 2) Queen's Business school - Queen's University; 3) Ivey - Western. You will be competing against application with the GPA of 3.5+, high GMAT, 3+ of work experience and the strong LORs.

My advice is to shoot for the 10-20 schools in Canada. Get slightly more experience (at least 1 more year) and become good friends with your boss who will write you a strong LOR. For MBA, a LOR from an engineering professor will not hold the same strength as from the operation manager of the company (or someone in the managing position).

As i said, im not willing to apply for the top university, because there's no chance for me to get accepted, i want a decent university (not top of the line and not bad also).

And for LOR, i have a good relations with the managers since my father own the company.

I am sure a quick google search will return many results on the MBA rating in Canada. Take a look and see where you stand.

Also dependent on how many applicants they have that year. Canada seems to attracting more and more international students each year. I would suggest thinking about why you are going the MBA. Some of the less established MBA programs will not lead significant career advancement.

I have another options which is management of HR, but all i need is some universities suggestions since i saw all of them asking the universities asking for a minimum gpa of 3

Do i have a chance with a gmat ??

Again, it all depends on the average profile of applicants. For example, Ivey says they need 3.3 (I think) but they won't admit anyone with less than 3.5 GPA, mainly because they have enough applicants with high GPA and therefore, they can admit the best.

If the minimum requirement is 3.0, then you will really need to get a high score on GMAT and hope that whoever applies with you won't have much higher GPA.
