Hi @sam1991, does it have to be in home country ONLY? Could it not be in a country where we are visiting on a visitors visa?

Situation: I am on a work visa currently in the USA. or if I am on a visitor's status in the US.

Hello Members,

For how long is the PRTD valid generally? I"ve seen a case where the applicant got a PRTD with validity of 2 years and another one who got it with validity of 6 months. Can anyone please advise the basis/parameters on which the validity of the PRTD determined?

Thanks!

Hello members,

I recently applied for PRTD and thought of sharing my experience as not many posts are available here.
I became a permanent resident of Canada in December 2016 and after staying for two weeks I came back to my home country (India) in January 2017.
I am planning to return to Canada shortly.
My family member in Canada received my PR card long back but since no one was coming and I didn't want to send it by courier (because of RFID) I thought of applying for PRTD.
I applied at my local VFS center in Pune in April 2017.
I filled the application form along with the checklist (downloaded from CIC website) and two photographs similar to that of PR application. I also wrote a formal application letter and explained my reason (job and personal) in that letter, explained that I have sufficient time available to complete the residency obligation once I return mentioning my exact returning date (Yes, I had already booked my tickets) and listed down the documents that I am attaching.
Documents that I attached were: Application form, checklist, COPR photocopy, SIN photocopy, Visa issued for first travel, entry and exit stamp from my first travel, Old passport photocopy, family member payslips (person is in Canada and Canadian payslips) and plane tickets.

In the form, I think question-19 (Humanitarian and compassionate reasons) I again explained my reason for leaving and how I have sufficient time to fulfill my residency obligation and also mentioned about my family member in Canada, we can add additional pages at the back of the form if required which I did. I feel that they only worry about the residency obligation and they even don't require travel plans for that which I will explain why later in the post.

I went to the VFS center and they gave two additional forms to fill 1) Family details form (you need to know the birth date, death date if deceased, present address of your parents, siblings, and spouse) 2) Entry-Exit form: You need to know exact date of each travel outside Canada after becoming PR ( I mentioned exit from Canada in January, entry to India as I didn't have any other travel)

I gave the application and VFS center rejected my photographs stating that this specification (50X70) was for PR while PRTD has specification of (45X35) with the face size same of 31-35 mm. CIC website shows (50X70) so I talked to them and after some persuasion they agreed to accept it, but since the face size was same in both the specifications I thought of trimming my same photos which I did at a local studio and again came back with 45X35 dimension photo. My application was accepted and on the next day was delivered to Visa office in Bangalore. I chose an option of collecting it from the VFS center in person we can also have it directly couriered to our home. After the 15th day of my application submission in Pune VFS, status was updated that my passports are dispatched and on the next day (16th day after submission) I collected it from the VFS center, in total 12 working days.
I received a visa which is valid for two years and can be used for multiple entries. Since I got the visa for two years I believe that they give validity such that even if I go anytime during this two years I will be able to fulfill my residency obligation and hence travel tickets are not required. They calculate the time for which I can stay back without hampering my residency requirements and give visa accordingly (but it is just a guess).
I have tried to mention everything over here if you have any further questions let me know and I will try to answer

Nice post.

I, too have applied for PRTD and have a question pertaining to photo specifications. While filling the form i was not sure which photo to have in the application form, the one which we had used for the COPR(50X70) or the smaller one (45X35). The confusion is there because the form talks about two different specifications of photo at two different places. As i was not sure of the size of photograph i got it confirmed from VFS before submitting the form on which photo to be attached to the form. I was told the PR one(50X70). Now what i see is that the photo which i have in my form is bigger than the one you had used in your application. This has got me a little worried.

Could you please confirm on whether there is any photo on the visa(PRTD) that has been stamped on your passport or you have been given any letter similar to COPR with photo attached?

I had submitted the form on the 13th of this month in New Delhi VFS office.

Hi Rockytg,

I am also planning to apply for PRTD shortly. Would you have an idea on how the validity of PRTD is determined? Can you please share?

Hi Rockytg,

They usually give it for a period of 6 months single entry. However, one can request for a long term multiple entry one by including a cover letter having the reasons for the same.

Below extract is from link 'http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5529ETOC.asp'

"
What if I am living outside Canada on a long-term basis?

Usually, PRTD counterfoils are issued for a single entry to Canada. However, you can request a long-term multiple entry PRTD if you:

  • meet the residency obligation; and
  • are living outside Canada on a long-term basis (for example, if you are a permanent resident accompanying your Canadian citizen spouse).
Include a cover letter that explains your circumstances and requests a multiple entry PRTD.

Multiple entry PRTD’s cannot extend beyond the expiry date of your passport."

Hi All,
I haven't done the landing yet, waiting for COPR to be mailed to me. Question, I'll likely do the landing this weekend if I get it or next weekend by driving through the boarder. However, I may need to go to NY for a work trip next month and I doubt I'll have PR card by then. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the PRTD in New York? Is it issued the same day and can I request a multiple PRTD while I wait for PR?

Hi, did you filled up information in section 15.Residency obligation 16.Absence while accompanying a canadian permanent resident and 18. Statement of consent. even after marking no to all questions in section 13??

On my application, I gave the dates I was in Canada for short landing under item 15.

For item 16, I said NO and left everything blank.

For item 18, I said YES and gave my SIN which I obtained during my short landing in Canada.

Hope this helps!!! Good Luck!
