Some practical tips towards citizenship interviews:
  • Do not wear perfumes!
  • People get summoned for interview in an alphabetical ascending order. So if your surname starts with Z, expect a long wait...
  • Try and answer the questions, if possible, in Yes/No format.
  • Do not show any impatience with Biographical questions like your date of birth, address, etc. It is a simple technique to ascertain whether the person attending the interview is the person who he/she claims to be.
  • Do not expect completely private settings, sometimes interview happens in the waiting area
  • Don't try and crack jokes, unless you are absolutely sure! Just to be on the safer side...
  • Take employment related documents such as pay stubs in addition to what you submitted as copies with the application. Just to be on the safer side...
  • Translate passport stamps if the language is not English or French to be on the safer side. About $7 per copy. Just to be on the safer side...
  • Take all your passports, even those before the period under consideration. Just to be on the safer side...
My experience was rather pleasant, here is composite experience:
Officer: Hello.
Us: Good afternoon
Officer: Please state your bio info
Us: Provided Bio info correctly
Officer: Please provide your ids one by one. Passport, PRC, Additional Ids, Proof of language proficiency
Us: Handed them over
Officer: Announces our test scores
Us: Very pleased with ourselves
Officer: Starts checking our Physical presence, mumbles, and compares what is in the passport with their records.
Us: We had 50 to 90 days of buffer, not concerned at all
Officer: Body language indicated the interview is near the end
Us: Now fully relaxed
Officer: Asks us whether we plan to continue to live in Canada
Us: Affirmative
Officer: Finally some small talk, Says the previous interviewee wore too much perfume and the interview had to be postponed to a later point in the day. Hands back all our documents.
Us: Express our concurrence
Office: Hands out a paper to me and asks me to verify bio info
Me: Tried some humor "Can double check with my passport?"
Officer: Don't you know your own name?
Me(thought): Bummer! Spouse, out loud: "If it was an attempted joke, it failed"
Officer: Everything looks OK! We will let you know the decision in 2 to 3 weeks
Us: thank you!

Status was changed to DM the following day, we received the oath invite in three weeks, the oath was taken after about six weeks! Hope this helps...

Yes, interview was conducted after the test! All the day's interviewees were ushered to a small auditorium where the test was conducted after verifying the documents; after the test, all were requested to sit in the waiting for their turn to attend the interview...

Thanks for the info. I have a question, since I am with a friend, and no working from last Dec, how does that affect that (work place question)? Is this Work information a must for passing the interview?
@HamiltonApplicant I have a similar query. I am a self employed freelance worker working on project to project basis so I dont have a job employment history. I am about to be eligible to file my citizenship application but I'm worried about filling in the work information column as I am required to give a month to month account of what I was doing in the last 6 years. My gravest concern is that I have been out of work since last 1 year (mainly travelling, updating my professional skills through self learning, reading etc. kind of a sabbatical) and living off of my savings. Do you think I might get in trouble for that? Should I wait and file after I find new work? Is it important for me to be employed for a while when I show up to my citizenship interview? Would being out of work and living off savings be construed as having weak ties to Canada?

I'm sorry I might be overthinking but I am genuinely worried about this.

Sat the test/interview yesterday. Calgary.

I was one of the first out of the test and the interviews were called pretty much in the order that you came out of the test. (Thankfully...as my last name is a W had it been called alphabetically it would have been a long day.)
They started calling names for the interviews as soon as people were out of the test and we didn't have to wait for everyone to be finished which was nice!

Agent was very friendly, told me my score, said Congratulation and checked my documents.
Only question asked was if I was currently employed.
Said everything looked good and I should expect my letter in the next 1-3 months. (again, Calgary... so damn slow!)

Interview was less than 5 mins and no stress at all.
(Thou there was a gentleman before me taking much more time to get through)

Whole test to interview to leaving was just about 1 hour.

Congratulations! Thank you for sharing the experience...

The day of my test, we were not allowed to exit the auditorium till everyone was finished. Those who finished quickly made to wait in the back of the auditorium/conference room.

BTW, I guess there was no 308 vs 338 question in test....

Can see your score in the screen once it is done? I guess the exam is on computer.

Hahaha - Nope!

Ugh - having to wait around would have been annoying to say this least!

Good old pencil and paper my friend! ;) (In Calgary anyway)

The guy I interviewed with simply let me know my score, briefly showed the marking to me, and said Congratulations...

They did say in the talk before the test took place that if you have answered any incorrectly (I got 20/20 so can't comment) they said that they would not be telling you which ones you got wrong, you would just simply be shown your mark.

Interview feedback from Stef.

I have an extensive travel history - all in Europe and mostly due to my elderly Mum who I take around to see family all over Europe.

The agent went through all of my stamps VERY thoroughly and ticked them off one by one on the list that I have provided them with in my application. She also had another computer list to check and they had figured out that I had actually missed one trip. She asked me whether I could remember where I went and I guessed.
She was fine with that as I had enough buffer days.

She also asked me about my family (husband and kids), what they are doing and so forth.

I believe my case was straight forward as I have a Canadian husband born in Vancouver, Canadian children who went to school/ university in Canada and are still residing there and I have only applied after 9 years already in Canada.

I could convince her that the center of my life is in Canada, that I intend to retire here and that my travels are all related to looking after my Mum and my family in Europe. I am not sure I needed to do this but it certainly helped.

It was a very friendly interview and I was completely honest regarding all my travels, including that this will continue in the future.

Without wanting to scare anybody: making sure that your information that you supplied them with is absolutely honest to the best of your abilities is really important. Next to me was a guy who had written the exam and was then told that he had spent over 256 days in another country in one year and that he should withdraw his application.

I strongly believe they look at the whole picture and they know exactly when and where we were, at least to some extent.

Nevertheless, as said the test was doable. You do need to study, but if you do you should have no problems. I made one stupid mistake in the test.
Best of luck to all of you

Ours was Hamilton Centre as well. Similar interview experience as what you described. Did you actually recieve the letter after three weeks from date of test?. When did your online status reflected oath invite?. We took the test on July 14th.. DM change on 15th.. still waiting for letter.
