Passport Request when on holiday in Canada

Hi, I submitted my PR documents on March 2 and my current status is medicals passed and background check not applicable. The average six-month processing time period would end on September 2 for me so if all goes well, I could get the passport request letter in August or September. I live in the UK, but I am Iranian so I will need the landing visa.

The problem is I am going on holiday to Canada to see my family from August 12 to September 2. That's about 3 weeks. It's my understanding that the passport request letter asks for your passport to be sent within 30 days. I feel like that's real tight. Plus I am worried what if I get the request a week before I leave. That's not enough time.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation before? Since I'll be in Canada, is there anything I can do from there? Alternatively, is it possible to get some sort of extension so I can go on my holiday and just come back to the UK and submit my passport then?

I know I am making a lot of assumptions here. I'd just like to be prepared for every eventuality.

On a separate note, since I already have a long-term visitor visa to Canada (valid until late October 2019), do I still need the separate landing visa anyway? Sounds redundant if you ask me!

Any relevant advice is appreciated! Thank you! :)

Yes unfortunately you still need the landing visa. At the same time they also issue COPR, so you would have to remit your passport (information) anyway.

It would be ideal in your situation to receive the PPR the day before you leave. You can just send the passport the day you get back. The problem is if you receive PPR early August, you might not have enough time to remit the passport before you leave, and you only have 30 days to do so (in the middle of your trip).

Thank you @picklee for your response.

That's a good point on COPR. I know for visa-exempt nationals, they only request a photocopy of the bio page to issue the COPR. I wonder since I already have a visitor visa, whether they will go down a similar route or not. I guess that's a question for CIC unless someone in these forums has already had a similar experience.

Yes, the ideal date would be as close to my holiday as possible. However, I am not really asking about the ideal. So has anyone had a similar situation at which time they were abroad (or about to go) and got a PPR? Did you manage to get extra time from CIC? Did you end up cancelling (or delaying) your travel plans? I'd rather not change my travel plans as it would end up costing me a lot of money and headache, but if that's the only option, then I would have to. Of course as I said before, this is all hypothetical. :)

Here is an excerpt from the PPR email I received:

complete. You must complete the following steps within 30 days in order for our office to issue your Confirmation of Permanent Residence and, if applicable, permanent residence visa. If for any reason you are not able to meet this deadline, please inform us immediately by email to: CPC-CTD-Ottawa@cic.gc.ca with details concerning your situation.
Bold is their emphasis.

@picklee thank you for that. It's very helpful information. At least now I know there's a way to sort it out if this problem comes up. Again, thank you for your help. :)

@amcanuk: I am in a similar situation! I have a dependent, who is planning to travel abroad for around 3 weeks starting July end, until 3rd week of Aug. I am worried that we might be asked to submit our passports while my spouse is travelling.

I am trying to find a solution to this as well, in case this happens. I like to be prepared and know my options. If you find any additional information, please share.
