Hi guys,

Hope you can give us some advice..

We have received our COPR and are flying to Canada (from Singapore) on September 2017. We learned that we can make a list of goods to follow for the other items that we may not be bringing along with us. In this way we will be waived of paying taxes for these items.

1. Can anyone please share any advice on best sea freight companies to get in Singapore.
2. Will it be better to just add and pay for extra luggages instead of sending items thru sea freight? We are taking Korean Air (Sg to Korea to Vancouver) then Air Canada (Vancouver to Winnipeg)
3. would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide a recommended list to bring and not to bring

Looking at our things, we are really in a dilemma on which items to tag along and which to just give up.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Angelwings,

Are you a Singaporean moving over to Canada? Firstly, congrats to receiving your COPR. Your final destination will be winnipeg? I will be lodging my final application soon.

Few questions you got to ask yourself.

1. Is this your first landing there after getting your COPR
2. Are you doing a soft landing or will you be returning to Singapore in the next couple of weeks
3. If you are doing a soft landing, advise to treat it like a "holiday". Come back to Singapore and then you can start getting ready to move your stuff over.
4. Bring your essential things along with you when you are doing a "non return" trip. Things like your documents, your clothes (yes winter wear as it will be cold). Any non essential things, ask some one to bring it over.
5. You have 2 options. Use a professional mover or use a 3rd party logistics person to ship your cargo over. Either way, it will take about 60 days +/-. Shipment from US to Singapore is about 43 to 45 days on average. So give and take here. Price wise, 3rd party will be slightly cheaper but you got to pack them yourselves against professional mover who does all the job for you which will cost more.
6. What to ship over - Non breakable items and items which you are ok to wait.

Hi Kennerve,

Thanks for your reply. I'm a Filipino PR in Singapore. All the best on your application yah.

1. Yes it will be our first landing after COPR
5. In that case, a 3rd party logistic may be a practical option to take. Would you happen to have any particular company in the list?
6. I once came across a post stating items not practical to bring along, hence, not worth the effort and extra $ on spending on a sea freight/luggage. In addition, there was also a guideline on recommended stuff to send over because rather more costly buying in Canada. Unfortunately my application then was way far from the COPR stage so I wasn't able to take note of it. It was quite a good reference to look into..

@angelwings

I do have some 3rd party logistics guys that I know off. I am in this line as well which is why I will probably be using a 3rd party logistics company. Which company i have not finalized yet as I will only do that costing after I get my COPR.

Definitely would not agree to add on weight on your travel as you will have more important things to manage when you land there and you will not want to weigh the burden of carrying so many heavy stuff.

The cheapest way will be of course by sea freight. The most you will be taking is a few pallets of stocks. For a full container load of stocks, the average price will be around $6K +/-. It will be too technical to go into full details here.
