I am a Canadian citizen born and raised and I got married to my now husband who is currently in Canada on a study permit (he's from Nigeria). We have applied for spousal sponsorship, permenat residence and a work permit. My question is there a certain requirement for income I need to make. I am currently on sick leave turning over into maternity and parental leave due to severe illness and complications during my pregnancy, we are also currently renting from my mom. We consulted someone and they flat out said to our face 'I think your wasting your time and money because you aren't working right now and you look like you are dependent on your mom'. I would like to know our chances as we are highly stressed about the situation with a baby on the way. His current student visa expires on July 30th, 2017, does he also have to leave when it expires or can he stay as we have put in the application? Thanks in advance!

As @profiler said the fact is, it's pretty hard not to be approved to sponsor. As long as the sponsor is:
- a Canadian or a PR
- not in jail or prison
- has not committed a violent crime against family (domestic)
- does not receive social assistance for anything other than a recognized disability
- isn't currently sponsoring someone else (remember the sponsorship period is 36 months)

That's it. If all those "tests" pass, the sponsor can sponsor. End of story.

As for the expiry student visa. He can stay however it's better to extend his visa which he can apply for an extension online and if he doesn't have a work permit he can also apply for it with the inland sponsorship

Or apply for a visitor visa, if he doesn't plan to extend his study.

I forgot to say he already applied for an extension on his study permit and an inland work permit as well. We are just waiting to hear back on the decisions of those, so even if they have not approved it by the time his current student visa expires is he allowed to stay until they make a decision?

yes and he even can continue to study. He will be on implied status until CIC makes a decision on the extension. He only has to prove to the university that he applied on time and that CIC hasn't made a decision yet.
