ok, I thought I had this sorted. But now I'm worried again. I moved to holland 13 years ago from Canada and worked here for 9 years. I am married with one child and we all have Dutch nationality, my child and I have Canadian nationality also. Now I want to sponsor my husband and move to Canada

I thought it would be ok to show my notice if assessment from holland since I haven't filed taxes in Canada since I left

But I never told CRA I was leaving so what if they still consider me a resident who had to file taxes all these years. I had no idea.

What should I do. I'm going to Canada in a few weeks should I see an accountant and file the last 7 years back?

Will this affect my spousal sponsorship

As you were gone for 13 years and settled in Holland, you would not have been considered a tax resident during those years. You don't need to file back taxes.

This will have no effect on your sponsorship app.

Thank you for saying that, it makes me feel better. But does it matter that I never told Canada Revenue that I was leaving or that I was a non resident? What if they still think of me as a resident bc I never said otherwise

I do still have my Td bank account and drivers licence. I just used my parents address. I have nothing else there though.

Many people leave without updating CRA; the concern for CRA is when people either claim credits/benefits while they are a non-resident or they fail to file taxes when they are still considered a resident. You were gone and settled in another country for 13 years, so you weren't a tax resident, and you didn't claim any benefits/credits when you were a non-resident, so you're fine.

Hello,

I am back in Canada now and have updated my Service Canada and Service Ontario ID and accounts, however neither of these government agencies talk to the CRA. I have just gotten my access code to the CRA “My Account” and it is still listing me as “Single” and with no children. I am unable to amend this information bc I haven’t filed a Canadian tax return in the past two years.

Does anyone know how I can update CRA with the marital status from single to married (married abroad in 2011) and information on my child (now 10 years old)? If I can’t do it online, do I need to mail in the forms?

I’d like to get things sorted out with CRA so I can apply for the Child Tax Benefit credit now that I am back to residing in Canada.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi

Easiest thing to do is just call CRA.

You just need to call cra and they will update it for you. Or you can change your marital status online too on cra website.
