Hi. I am from a trv-exempt country and I don't require a temporary visitors visa. can you apply for a co-op work permit at the point of entry into Canada and get it processed the same day? Would I have to go to a special border service crossing like lacolle-Champlain etc. anyone has any experience with this. My internship at a Canadian unit stars end of June.

1. Unless you are an International Student at a Canadian school the employer would have to either get an approved LMIA or you would have to apply under the International Experience Canada (IEC) if you are eligible and meet the following criteria.

The type of work permit you get in the International Co-op (Internship) category is an employer-specific work permit.

This category is for you if:http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/eligibility.asp

  • You’re a student registered at a post-secondary institution
  • You have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada
  • You need to do this work placement or internship to complete your studies
  • You’ll work for the same employer in the same location during your stay in Canada
2. You can't just roll up to a port of entry and request it.

Hey PMM,
Thanks for responding. I checked out tour link and I don't think I am eligible for the permit under the IEC because of my country of origin. I am from Barbados and it doesn't appear as one of the countries that Canada has that agreement with. I was told I could apply at the point of entry for a co-op/intern work permit under the inter international mobility program for worl related to research, education or training programs pursuant to r205 (c)(¡.1) And exemption code c32 for which veterinary internships fall under. Are you familiar with this?

So I was told I could apply flat the point of entry with the border services officer. But I wanted to know if it can be processed the same day. My internship program starts June 26th. I have my letter of introduction for my study oemeit and supporting documents from the university to show that the internship is requirement of my study. I tried to apply online for it but I'm not sure if I applied correctly and the processing times ice seen online may not allow me to get it before the internship start date.
