Hi all,

To everybody already living in Canada. How is the job market and how is the job search for newcomers? Read an article that the market is not that easy at the moment.

I'm intending to settle in Toronto and I work in corporate banking (bachelor level).

Any experiences? Any advices?

Thanks

Look canada does not care about what job you do in your home country. Any foreign exp. is considered 0 in canada. Some people are lucky but others are not that so much its up to each individual that how much effort he puts in.

If you are ignorant that I am a bank manager why should I accept a lower post this attitude is not going to work in canada. My advice to you is start hunting for job in your field as soon as you reach there. Rather then exhausting out your savings look for survival jobs to gain some experience and for a start.

Hi Fatani

Thanks for your response. I never said I wouldn't accept something lower. I added my field because each market is different. IT is not the same as Marketing and Marketing is not the same as Finance and so on. I perfectly know it is illusionary to think you will get the same job as in your home country on day 1. You are going to work your way through. However, I believe everbody's aim is to somewhen get back into one's field.
I would like to read some first-hand experiences from people already living in Canada.

Anyone else who could share their experiences?

Thanks!

That sounds a bit extreme. It really depends on what you do. I don't think IT related jobs for example "require" Canadian experience as other jobs in Engineering, Banking, Medicine, etc. do.

There are several threads on this issue in the 'Settlement Issues' section of this forum.

I started a similiar thread a few weeks ago: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/pipe-dreams-immigrant-stories.487450/

I found this thread which was made earlier: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/canadas-immigrants-diary-challenges-faced-by-new-immigrants-t188286.0.html

In a nutshell:
Success is not guaranteed(duh). The factors which seem to be pertinent are the industry you are in, the stage in your career, age, etc...

IMHO, do your own research, and do not rely on "official" reports. Search for jobs before moving to get an idea of what to expect. Do not move and hope/expect everything fall in place on your schedule.

Cheers

How did you interview, was it via Skype or did you have to go to Toronto in person?
Most likely Skype.
Most companies, even small ones, prefer to conduct preliminary interviews on Skype.
Once the candidate is almost finalized, then perhaps some companies, not all, conduct in-person HR interviews.
Even here, most still prefer everything on Skype and the person steps into the new company on his/her first day of the new job.

This is a fake thread created by the member deerestlovelybear. He cooked the entire story. He was not married at all when he posted that. He has so much of hate that he doesn't want anyone to come in to Canada since he has got in. When confronted, he responded saying that he and his cousin shares his account. It doesn't take a genius to guess that someone is lying when they say they share a forum account with their cousin.

You can check the thread "should I settle here? Is it worth it?" where I confronted him with screenshot.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

We all know that immigrating to another country is not going to be a piece of cake. It's good to not have the pink glasses on and to think everything will just fall into our lap.
Sometimes by reading all these stories it is easy to get cold feet and think it is better to stay where we are. But we cannot be discouraged. It's not gonna be easy and great successes always had a hard beginning. Most of us will have the handicap of not having any Canadian work experience. Unfortunately we cannot change that circumstance until we really land out first job in Canada (and that first one will be the hardest to get). Is it difficult to get that first job? Yes. Is it impossible? No. We just have to be well informed and prepared. And work hard! I am now investing a lot of time in understanding the Canadian market. And what obviously is very important is NETWORKING. Talked to Canadians and they recommend getting involved in volunteer work from day 1 on! In that way you show you are integrating, gaining some "canadian experience" and most importantly you are expanding your network! If you can, go and study as well. This will give you a Canadian degree and again a network! A Canadian told me: Most people make an MBA not mainly for the sake of the education itself but for the network.

I hope we will all get a piece of the Canadian dream. So let's work hard and network, network, network!

All the best!

I am currently living in Singapore and has never been to Canada.

I decided moving to Canada in January and started job search in February and by mid-April I got three job offers from companies based in Toronto. I had to take a salary cut though. My past base salary in Silicon Valley was 120,000 USD and the three offers from Canada varied between 100,000 CAD and 130,000 CAD.
