Hi All,

I would like to ask if anyone has information about how long does it take to get a work permit for a PostDoc fellow in Canada.

I am from Syria and currently staying in Malaysia (graduated with PH.D from a Malaysian Institute), I have an Offer from the University of Toronto and i have applied online for a work permit...

My wife is accompanying me to Canada and I have submitted an open work permit for her...

We did the biometrics and still awaiting for further info from the Canadian Immigration to do the medical exam...

Please let me know how long does this process take usually.

I have applied on 11th of December 2016...

Thanks in advance... :)

1. The posted processing time for 80% of applications is 15 weeks. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/index.asp

Dear Abdelahhad,

I am your succeeder with the same story, applying for work permit for me (PDF) and open work permit for my wife. Currently, I am in Japan as a PDF and I am a native of Sri Lanka.

After all the questions answered in online application tool, for the medical examination, a document called 'Request for Medical Exam' is to be filled by choosing 'yes' or 'no'. Which option did you choose? I am confused which one to choose; or did you get any advanced medical examination (up front medical exam) in Malaysia in this regard.

Please do help me.

Hi uma1982suthan,
I have filled the document "Request for Medical Exam" and I am waiting to hear something from CIC, Now I have completed 2 about 58 days waiting without any further update on my application. I am expected to be asked to do the medical exam and maybe they would ask for additional documents. Doing upfront medical exam wont expedite your application. I can advise you to choose "YES" for Request for Medical Exam.
Regards,

Thank you Abdelahhad. Did you choose "yes"; if so on which basis?
I asked the HR department of my future employer (university) and got a suggestion that since my job is not under the category for which CIC requires a medical examination, and they advised to choose 'NO'.
When you suppose to start your work (according to your appointment letter?). It is ridiculous that you are waiting for 58 days! Indeed, it depends on which visa office process our application.! Good luck!

Hi Uma,
I think doing a medical examination is mandatory if you have stayed for more than six months in one of the listed countries. For me since I have stayed in Malaysia for 7 years and this country was included within the list so I chose Yes. In fact the time processing tool provided at CIC shows that applications for work permit from Malaysia would take 14 weeks.
I should have started my work since 1st of February 2017 based on my contract. Until now I did not get the VISA so the HR department sent me email saying that once I land they will modify my contract and apply for work permit extension for me..
We shall keep each other updated on our timelines.
Regards,
Aboud

Hi all,

I am posting this information all the applicants applying for TWP for getting a work visa in Canada as a Postdoc. The two week processing definitely works for us and this is true for all my Indian mates. You just have to make sure that you submit all the information required by CIC portal, be it PCC, medical, offer letter or transcript, and request for TWP in the explanation letter.

All the best folks.
