Hi all,

This is for those who may be searching information on ee IRCC medical test and have epilepsy.

I am 30 and was diagnosed with epilepsy aged 18 months. I have had about 30 seizures (tonic clonic) with approx 25 occuring before aged 20. In the last 10 years I have been on Lamotrigine 100mg per day. My last seizure was January 2016 and the one before that August 2013.

Today I had my medical. I declared my epilepsy to the dr with the details above. She recorded everything and didn't seem concerned.

I am obviously awaiting the results of this and whether or not I pass medical admissibility. From what I have read my condition does not fall under excessive demand ($6500 a year in costs) or cause a danger to the public. The dr recorded I work full time with a driving license and have no restrictions.

I'll comment back once I hopefully pass medicals and will eventually order my notes to see what, if any, comments were made.

If anyone wants to reassure me now though, feel free.

:)

sorry to hear about your condition... but epilepsy is not a contagious disease and doesnt pose any dangers to others, so i dont see any reason why it would be a problem... its a good thing you declared your condition however.

one of my good friends has epilepsy too... his last seizure was like 2 yrs back i think... but as long as its under control you should be OK.

when'd you file your e-apr ? i completed mine on 24th jan

Sorry to hear about your condition. Just for my information and trying to know more about it. What would happen in you had a seizure while driving?

It greatly depends on the type of seizure and if they have any warning of it coming (so they can pull off the road).

If it happens while driving... guessing it would result in a bit of a crash :p

In the UK you have to declare any black out (faint or seziure) and then surrender your license for a year.

As my seizure was over a year ago I now have my license back. My seizures have never put me out of work for more than a day and have not resulted in a hospital visit since childhood. I'm not sure if the DR recorded that last fact. I've requested my copy of the report in 7-10 days so I will see if I'm an 'A' or 'B' and what notes. I can certainly provide a neurologists clean bill of health if needed, but I hope it won't come to that.

If someone has a medical condition that may pose a burden to the Canadian health care system - they can be refused even if it's not contagious and doesn't pose a danger to others.

However I agree that mild Epilepsy shouldn't be a problem at all.

Thanks guys.

I wanted to keep a track of my medical results/experience in this thread just for others to see. Epilepsy is fairly common and unless it is coupled with other developmental/physical disorders it shouldn't be on a VO's radar. However, if the VO is having an off day...

I can easily submit a full neurologist report from all my medical records in the UK showing minimal impact on my life. My brain just has a rest moment every now and then.

Adding some information:

I'm intending to settle in Alberta. I have found on Alberta Health the cost of my medication, Lamotrigine 100mg. It is $0.3735 a day https://idbl.ab.bluecross.ca/idbl/lookupInterchangeableGrouping.do?productID=0000007562&aigCode=0127134HJW&formCode=TAB&routeCode=ORL

This means If Alberta were to pay for my medication under province health I would only cost them $136 a year. Very short of the $6550 a year max.

This information is here to help others searching. I will continue to update this thread for posterity.

I agree with Scylla, IMO this would not, and should not be a big deal. It just doesn't fall into the categories of what I've learned of people failing a medical before, and I think you'll be just fine :D

Just so you know! Health canada doesnt pay for the drugs. You have to pay out of your pocket for all pharmaceutical drugs unless you require hospitalization in which province will pay for the hospital related expenses and the drugs used inpatient for you.

Thanks,
Aspiring Canadian Pharmacist :)

I think VO doesn't look at the medicals at all. It will be looked by DMP and I believe emotions will have very little say in it. They will just go by facts as it is medicine.

I have medication necessity too.. hypertension and it's under control. I just checked the drug costs just to get a rough sense.. it's less than 50 cents a day.. I have regular health checkups every year and I had one last year (April) where all my reports (ECG, serum cretainine etc.) were normal. I got ITA and I have scheduled my medicals next month. I freak out thinking about my medicals outcome and really hoping that everything ends up well.

Hypertension and diabetes are not economic burden so need not worry! Its common these days. Make sure ur kidneys are fine.

In that case then I shouldn't be costing them a thing ;)

Thank you :)
