Proof of employment - Independent Contractor

Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
I have been working as an independent contractor with a company for past 3.5 years. What I received from that company was contract letter explaining the terms and conditions, compensation, duration of engagement and duties in a complete 6 page document. Though I do not work for the company as an employee (but as an independent contractor), I have secured a reference letter on a plain paper signed by the owner of that company. Are these documents (contract and reference letters on plain paper) enough proof of employment with the company? I can also show income tax returns filed for income received from that company as well as bank statements.

Thanks!

I assume you mean outside of Canada.

Well, no, that's not enough for "proof of employment" because you are not "employed." : ) You are contracted. But yes, it sounds like you have the required documents - the contract, the letter, income tax returns... Invoices and or pay statements would be better than bank statements, but bank statements are better than nothing.

You can review the documentation requirements here under Proof of Employment - there's a paragraph on self-employed. Don't worry about the stuff that does not apply to you, e.g. you do not need a business license. if you are not incorporated, most independent contractors are not.

I am in the same situation! But what I'm confused about is that I just landed here, and haven't paid my taxes yet, would that be a problem? I will obviously explain that! And also, this whole thing about being incorporated etc. has been driving me nuts, I really hope that's something I can do without!
