Cancelled passport with a valid visitor Visa, can I travel to Canada?

Hi,
I need an advice from senior members...

I got married on February 2016, changed my legal name and I had to update my documents, which includes my passport.

I have a multiple visitor Visa (V-1) valid until January 19th, 2020 in my old passport with my maiden name, which now is invalidated because I already receive my new one with my married name.

I would like to know if it’s possible to travel with my new passport (married name) and present a valid VISA in my invalidated passport (meaning that I will need to travel with both passports). Or if I need to apply for a new Visitor Visa.

I found the information below on CIC's website - ENF 4 Port of entry examinations

"13.18 Valid visas in expired passports
Visa officers will not put a visa in an expired document and will not issue a visa for a period surpassing the expiry date of the passport or travel document. Occasionally, documents containing valid visas are cancelled or replaced. If a valid visa inside an expired document is presented at the POE along with a valid passport or travel document, the visa is considered valid."

I don't know if it works for me, once I have changed my name and now I have a married name.

Someone went through the same situation?

Thank you!

Thank you very much!

I do really an opinion who went through the same situation, I just receive an answer from CIC saying

"Once the name has been changed in the passport, you must submit a new visa application."

I had a similar situation to yours...

When I was in process of obtaining my PR I had a visitor record issued in my passport. I too changed my name because of marriage and was able to travel to both passports (my new one with new name and my cancelled one with maiden name and visitor record). I asked about getting the visitor record put into my new passport but was told that there was no need to since my visitor record in my cancelled passport was still valid. I crossed the border 5 days a week for several months and never encountered any trouble traveling this way. I realize a visitor record isn't the same as a visitor visa but I would think you wouldn't have a problem.

Have you visited Canada yet?

I have the same situation. I got married and my last name has changed. I have a valid tourist visa, I have already been to Canada 3 times. Since I'm going to need to change my passport, would I still be able to use my valid visa in my old passport. Where I'm from, they told me that they're only going to cancel my passport not the visa so I can still use my old passport only for the visa and the new passport together, but I don't know if that's the same for Canada. Because it would be really bad if they wouldn't accept it and send me all the way back.. :)
Of course I can prove documents for my legal name change, such as my ID which provides my last name before marriage, and my new last name, and our marriage certificate which says the same things.
Do you think I'll be able to get in if I carry all these?
Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Hi Rafa_A,

We have the same situation. Where are you from? Were you able to get in to Canada with the 2 passports? Or did you have to apply for a new visa for the passport with married name?
