The restrictions on your work permit are usually indicated on the work permit itself. See if you have this on your WP:
"Unless authorized, must not attend any educational institution or take any academic, professional or vocational training course"
Usually a worker is not allowed to study courses greater than 6months. Anything less, should be fine.

Thanks for that, that restriction is on the work permit, and the course I am interested in is online with a maximum completion duration of one year but it has been completed by some students in six months. My work permit far exceeds the expected completion date of my studies in the course if I am able to take it.
Is it possible to get a study permit simultaneously with my existing work permit?

Distance learning can be through e-learning, correspondence, or internet courses. Distance learning is a process by which technology is used in ways where the student does not have to physically be in the place where the teaching is taking place.
Since by definition distance learning does not require one to be in Canada, a study permit cannot be issued for this type of course. For example, if a foreign national authorized to work in Canada is prohibited from engaging in studies as per a condition of their work permit, they are allowed to engage in distance learning courses.
However, some distance learning courses include an in-Canada portion to the program (e.g., special tutorials or the writing of final exams). If the overall course of study is greater than six months, then the student requires a study permit for the in-Canada portion of the program, even if the in-Canada portion is less than six months. The duration of the study permit should be for the duration of the in-Canada portion only.

but some online certificates are course based and it might take 6months to finish or more than that. But it doesn't have any in canada portion. Then even if i apply for the study permit they cant issue me any permit.ragluf said:

If you are inside Canada and are on a work permit, then if you take an online course, you do not need a study permit. For as long as you are in Canada, then your status is that of a worker. You do not have to get a study permit for the online course.
If you are inside Canada and on a student permit, and if you take an online course, that does not have any in-Canada portion, then you cannot get a study permit for the online course. Your authorization duration will be only up to your current study permit. The online course can be continued outside of Canada if your current study permit expires and you have to leave the country.

Hi, for a person with a full work permit, whose permite says: "Unless authorized, must not attend any educational institution or take any academic, professional or vocational training course", is it okay to enroll in a course with a duration of less than 6 months? The particular case that is of my interest, is the case of a language course in an academy, inside of Canada (not an online one).
If the answer is "No", should this person apply for a study permit, in addition to the work permit?

It's a bit late for this, but I was in a similar boat. Then I decided to take this 16-hour first aid course because (a) the company I took the course with is not a educational institution (doesn't have a DLI); (b) the course is not academic, professional or vocational training in my opinion. That's just my personal interpretation, you shouldn't take my word for it, but again, do you think CIC's gonna give you a hard time for taking a first aid course? However, if the course you look at is part of academic or professional training, or from a educational institution, I say you should ask them first.
