PGWP extension due to passport expiry+ SOWP

Hello,
My PGWP was issued for less duration because of my passport expiry and it will expire in May 2026. However I cannot apply extension as of now because we have more than a year to apply for a new passport. I want to apply for SOWP for my partner whose WP will expire in June. Can we make both applications at the same time or are the chances of refusals high? And what if we apply only for the SOWP providing an explanation letter, will it be considered given the current rules of more than 16 months validity?
