That’s not how it works . You don’t draw down on your insurable hours for benefits . It’s not like a bank account.

Real life example
My mother was terminally ill . Critical care, compassionate care . She was given a very short time to live .

I was working full time . November xxxx I applied for compassionate care thru EI.
With documentation that my mother will pass. It got approved . I had the required hours . Unfortunately I only received one payment , since my mother was in ICU and the cancer was very aggressive

Fast forward to Feb xxxx, everyone where I worked got notice of being laid off . Since I already used my insurable hours as a claim for my mom starting in November xxxx, I was only eligible for about four weeks of regular EI . That was for regular EI. It’s all based upon a one year window

The hours you used for your critical care are gone . You’d need to work the required hours once again to be eligible for a benefit .

In a nutshell your insurable hours required is based upon the preceding eligibility window I believe of 52 weeks , from the date you make the claim

How many weeks did you use ? All 26 ?
Thanks for the answer.

I just used onlt 7 weeks,

Also, I applied till the 5th of February, and I received it. Now, I need more as I have to stay with my mother further.

Clarify
When did your claim start ? The claim runs for one year .
Did you start the claim in February 2024 ?
If you started it in February 2024 the claim and any associated weeks of benefits end February 2025

If you only took seven weeks , then you’ve finished the claim

You’d need to start a whole new claim with the required number of hours in the preceding qualifying period

You cannot extend the claim you’re on if it started a year ago

You can renew the claim in specific situations

“In Canada, compassionate care leave can be renewed after the initial 52-week period ends. However, the employee must have used up all 28 weeks of leave within the first 52 weeks”

You had to have used up all the weeks allotted and you haven’t

Hi Everyone
I need to apply for EI for taking care of critically ill person. i know that we need to submit a medical certificate form provided by service canada but the issue is that the hospital where the treatment is going on they have a policy to not sign or authorize any external forms but they did provide their own medical certificate which has all the info about the disease etc and I have all reports and everything but I am worried if i don't get the Service canada's form then would my claim be rejected, please let me know if anybody faced this situation
Thanks
