Hey everyone!

I am looking for some advice regarding visitor visa for my boyfriend (34yrs) who is a Colombian citizen.

I have read that it is very hard to get a yes, so we are prepared. Of course, disappointment will be there, but we are applying with a realistic mindset and hoping for the best!

We are wanting to build the strongest application that we can. So, looking for some advice!

I know that the most important thing is proving he will be return to Colombia.

He does not have any property assets, which is our concern. I am hoping to play up the following things to show that he will return:
  • Work – He is in the Colombian Airforce. He has a leave for 1 month a year, and he picked to go in June. He will not spend the whole month in Canada. But hoping with a letter of employment stating his date of vacation and when he needs to return to duty will help.
  • Daughter – He has an 8-year-old daughter. He is an involved dad and financially supports his daughter, I know not that uncommon of a father, but he does not want to jeopardize his employment in Colombia because of her. Not sure if this will help but hoping it shows family ties in Colombia.
  • Owns Motorbike & Car – I read that listing these assets can help as well. Not sure if that is true but hoping this can show some ties to his country.
We are planning the visit to be 10 – 14 days. I will be in Colombia prior to his travel to Canada then we will travel together if he gets approved

How much should he have in his bank? I often see different amounts. So, it’s a little confusing. He will have some, then I was going to send some to top it up to be around $5k. Is that okay to do?

Should we have everything in English & Spanish? Like should I have my letter of invitation translated to Spanish?

I was in Colombia in December for about 12 days visiting him. So, I will attach a letter of invitation, but I will not mention our relationship status but just state ‘friends’.

Also, my stepdad is beginning his big fight against cancer (my heart is broken) and we have been told it’s grim (☹) so I would love for my guy to meet him. It would mean a lot to me. I just don’t think mentioning this would do anything to help. But this is a reason it’s really important for him to come in June. Although, we are still being realistic, I just really hope. I just need something good to be excited about, tbh.

I will also send a detailed travel plan with some things booked as we plan to go camping in Banff & Jasper and if anyone knows, you need to book those campsites asap!

For the plane ticket, we will not book but will show screenshots of the flights we are looking into and the price.

Those are my main questions and ideas. Is there anything else some can mention to help?

Again, we are realistic, but we want to put together a strong application. As strong as we can of course. So, any tips or suggestions would be amazing! We plan to apply within the next few weeks

No point lying IRCC will assume you are in a romantic relationship. Chances of approval are slim for a variety of reasons: foreign military, no property, country with a high asylum claim rate, minimal funds (would not top up since it will be pretty clear he likely didn’t earn the funds himself), risk that he will remain in Canada and you’ll get married, etc.

The daughter helps but doesn’t sound like he has primary custody. Has he ever traveled internationally and where? As an adult? For work?

You may want to just be honest and provide proof that your stepdad is very ill and that you want your bf to meet him before he passes. You’d need to include proof of his prognosis. Would also include proof of his leave and consequences if he didn’t return to the airforce if there is one. Also proof of having a daughter and any custody agreements showing he has regular custody. Anything is a bit of a long-shot so don’t have any great advice
