While moving from one province to another, I forgot to change my DLI in my study permit in Canada (I was not aware), and now the program I am attending is not in PGWP. From Sept 2023 to April 2024, I did my first course in Ontario, Niagara College. Then, I took a 4-month break in April 2024 while getting an admission letter for the second program at Niagara College and applied for a study permit. During this time, I also got admitted to Saskatchewan Polytech College in Saskatoon, and instead of pursuing a second year at Niagara College, I came to Saskatchewan College. I submitted my study permit and started my course in September 2024 at Saskatchewan Polytechnic College, Saskatoon.

I just realised that I was supposed to get my DLI changed, and now this program I am attending at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is not on the list for PGWP after the changes last year. I kindly need some urgent advice to make it right for me and get a 3-year work permit once I finish here in April 2025. I am still studying here. I am meeting my college on Monday (International advisor) but in a panic mode on what will happen now? Can someone help with a way-out here or an advice, please.

So you have been studying without a study permit since April 2024? Did Niagara inform IRCC to have your permit cancelled months ago? You didn’t notify IRCC at all even though had almost 10 months to do so? Why would you be eligible for a PGWP, and 3 years without a study permit. No way out really. Talk to your advisors.

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I have a valid study permit till July 31, 2025 but it was obtained from the admission letter of the Niagara College, ON. Just that I submitted the same to my new college in the different province (SaskPolyTech) but never knew to get the DLI changed as a process while coming here and joining college in September 2024.

You don’t have a valid study permit. So your study permit is only valid for Niagara, and you can only study there. You don’t have a study permit for SaskPoly. When did you change DLIs with IRCC?

Yes. I have a valid study permit, but I got it from Ontario. They (Saskatchewan College) accepted it, and I assumed at that time (Sept 2024) that they would internally do "something". It was only after I communicated with one of my friends that I learned of this blunder. They accepted it in Sep 2024, and I have already finished half of the program. I am due to graduate from this second program on April 31, 2025. Only because they accepted my current study permit I mistakenly assumed that everything was OK. I just got to know that I have to change the DLIs so I haven't done anything so far. I would be doing it ASAP. Now, since this new program which I am admitted right now, is not on the PGWP list after the new changes in Nov 2024, I am really stuck and do not know what to do, please!

You have a study permit for Niagara and the school is supposed to inform IRCC if you don’t return to cancel. Who is ”they” accepted it - you notified IRCC or not? If you didn’t notify IRCC then you have studied without a permit at SaskPoly. You have bigger issues than PGWP because seems you have been studying and possibly working since April 2024 without a permit valid for Sask Poly. Get a lawyer. You need a new study permit if you can even do that within Canada.

Thank you for your reply. As a first-timer here, I was not aware of such technicalities. But that is not a defence at all. A few of us were changing colleges, and I did so. I don't understand why the "they" (Saskatchewan, Sask Polytech college- Saskatoon) accepted that study permit and I got admitted here, and yes, I worked till August 2024 in Ontario before moving here (Saskatchewan). Since that time (Sep 2024), I have moved. I have not worked at all, not even a single day. If Niagara College had informed IRCC, I should have received an email as I am registered on the CRA website and updated my SIN last year. All this info about my case is from the previous 2 days, and the international student advisor has given me an appointment on Monday, Feb 3, 2025. I was panicking and unaware, so I came to this forum, where you have been immensely helpful. In his email, he briefly stated that I must urgently change my DLI and apply for a new study permit. And to find the answers to my hundreds of questions, I came here as the appointment is still 4 days away.

SaskPoly has nothing to do with accepting the study permit. CRA has nothing to do with IRCC either.

Sure! Thanks a lot. It was my faulty assumption that since the international division of SaskPoly accepted my study permit, they would initiate changes allowing me to study at SaskPoly. I kindly mean that no one ever told me anything about it, and my mistake is my ignorance and assumption. I just wanted to know that since I have never received any email from Niagara College or the IRCC about my status, I would not have known my blunder earlier. Now, I have advised the international division of SaskPoly, who briefly told me to get a new work permit. Please tell me if this is a terrible situation against me, or would it be ok and understood by IRCC?
