Work Permit Extension and Travel to the US Before Expiry

Hello everyone,

I’m currently on a work permit in Canada that expires on March 18, 2025. I have received the OINP Approval Extension Work Permit Letter and plan to apply for my work permit extension.

However, I have a few questions:
  1. I plan to travel to the US for a few days over the Family Day weekend in February and return to Canada on February 18, 2025. If I apply for the work permit extension before my current permit expires, will leaving Canada during this period affect my implied status after March 18, 2025?
  2. Is there a recommended timeline for how many days before my current work permit expires I should apply for the extension?
  3. When I re-enter Canada on February 18, will the immigration officer ask why I haven’t applied for the extension yet? Could this create any issues?
  4. If I decide to apply for the extension on February 19, right after returning to Canada, will this be okay?
I would greatly appreciate your advice or experiences related to traveling while waiting to apply for a work permit extension.
