Hi
i had a legal name change outside canada after beeing a PR.I got the court document and the document linking both names, but i dont have a forreign passport nor id with the new name, cause i got the document after getting back to Canada from my vacation to my home country.Looking in the citizenship application i need to give supporting documents ,and a provincial id,i dont have any id documents cause in quebec they dont change ur name except after citizenship.
Question is should i change my name while applying (considering i dont have an Id of the legal name change only a courts document and an official document linking between both names) or wait till after the citizenship cause it will only drag my application ?
Thanks again for ur help all :)

I would wait. I did it in the middle of my PR application and it caused problems. The application asks you about all the names you've used previously so they will realize who you are in regards to what names you have/had. I would definitely wait until the change is official and get a new passport. I'm in Quebec too. I was married in the States so they allowed the change to some capacity. I have both names on my Medicare but all my federal is in my married name because my US passport is. I would process the change where possible ASAP and then send it. Depending on certain circumstances the province may be forced to recognize it to some degree as they did with me. I am only a PR at the moment. I'm no lawyer or government official though.

Hey! I'm in the same boat. What happened in your case? I'd love to know.

Here's my situation:
- I changed my name legally, outside Canada.
- I returned to Canada with a PRTD because the airlines won't let me board a plane without one.
- I applied for a name change on my PR card.
- The IRCC asked me to provide a provincial document in my new name first.
- Quebec won't update my name on any ID card unless they see my updated PR card.

Thus, I have now ended up with two names. After all the hard work I did to change my name in my country, Quebec/Canada seem to force me to live with my old name ‍♂

It seems I'll have to apply for a legal name change in Quebec, but I'm not sure if I should do it before applying for citizenship or after. If I apply for citizenship, Canada will give me a passport in my old name. At the point, I won't have any major ID in my new name because I'll have to cancel my old passport as my country doesn't allow dual citizenship. So my only hope of keeping my new name will be by changing my name in Quebec, which is very difficult.

Did you adopt your spouse's name?

Nope. I changed my full name to the name that I've been using informally for many years. It's not due to marriage, but due to personal reasons.

You've started/asked this quesiton in multiple threads. See the other thread.

But you didn't mention in other that you've been using it for years. Document and show that in your Quebec name change request.

[Note, I'm not in Quebec and not a Quebec lawyer. May be worth consulting one. ]
