Hi all,
I got my Canadian PR but then moved to the US and got Green Card and since then have been living in the US. I was not in Canada during last 4 years and my Canadian PR card is valid for 1 more year.
My question is that, should I inform Canadian government that I would like to give up Canadian PR
or just let it expire?

Thank you!

Thank you for the explanation.
I will then apply for renouncing my Canadian PR.
Do you think they will challenge me that I did not stay in Canada for 3 years during 5 year period? I just want this renouncement application to be successful.

Why would they care ?

Seriously, why would they even care ?

Do you have any clue how many PR’s are floating around ? You’re just one of many

Few ummm... things.

You "PR" status does not go away on its own. What you probably were referring to was PR Card validity.

Your "PR" status is removed in a formal hearing OR if you renounce it.

If you DO renounce it, do know of few tax issues.

There is a concept of "Deemed Disposed" in Canada. What is it? When you become a PR, you are assumed to have acquired your assets at that day's price. When you stop being a PR, your assets are deemed disposed. That means... they assume you have sold your assets that day and at whatever was the fair market value that day. So differnce is your capital gain and you will be taxed on it.

Do look into it before you renonunce you PR.

After I got PR, I did not stay in Canada and did not work there.

Do you think they will tax me?

Actually, I got approval when I was abroad, came to Canada and got my PR card and left Canada, and was not able to come back for 4 years.

Unless you have other ties to Canada you would have never even filed Canadian taxes so why would you be taxed?
