My PGWP was expiring in February 2024 so in order to maintain my legal status in canada i applied for TRV visa before my work permit expired. I got my TRV approval in January 2024. I got multiple entry visa with expiry date on TRV sticker january 2031. I was living inside the canada all this time and assumed from TRV expiry that i don't have to renew my visitor visa every six month.

After that, i applied for family sponsorship PR application (inside canada) on October 13 2024. Sponsor got an AOR last week. I want to apply for open work permit so i got in touch with one immigration lawyer and she is saying that your TRV expired the day your work permit got expired and i applied for the wrong kind of visa and so i don't have any legal status in canada now. Please someone clear the confusion and help me what to do next and how will this thing affect my PR application in future

The immigrate lawyer is right. You were supposed to apply for a visitor record and not a TRV to maintain your status in Canada. You fell out of status when your PGWP expired and it's too late to restore your status. You need to wait until you have AIP before you will be able to apply for an open work permit.

Thats a serious mistake. You need to get your status restored, contact a immigration lawyer to discuss your options.

Read the OP's post again. It's too late to restore status and they are already working with an immigration lawyer.

Thank you so much for clarity. Though, i don't know what do you mean by AIP

Approved in Principle.
Got it. Spoke with lawyers as well, few of them suggesting to apply for temporary resident permit but processing time is about an year. I would rather wait for an update on my sponsor file. With TRV multiple entry visa i have , can i go to my homecountry and wait there untill they make decision on my file? Or i continue stay in canada and wait here

TRP processing time is closer to two years based on experiences on this forum.

Did you apply inland or Outland? If you applied inland, you have to be living in Canada and leaving will essentially cancel your application and you'll need to reapply from scratch Outland.

You can certainly chose to remain in Canada without status. Once you have AIP, you can then apply for the work permit.

Hello everyone, i applied my spousal sponsorship PR application through PR portal online. After i received AOR i created an account on PR tracker to track my application. In the application details my biometric and background verification shows in progress for last 3 weeks
but, i haven't received any biometric request in my email so far.

I tried to link my application to GC key account multiple times but that doesn't show any application in system at all. Is PR tracker is all i am getting updates throughout my file processing or linking it to GC key account is mandatory?

You need to post this to the Family Sponsorship section.
