Hey everyone, I'm a Canadian citizen and resident!
During the Covid lockdown, I meet someone from Afghanistan, we immediately clicked. Over the years we became closer and ultimately, we knew we wanted to be with each other.
Fast forward to 2024, I traveled to Kabul, met with her family and got married. We've been married for about three months now and the process of getting Afghan documentation was very tedious and hard.
It took me more than a month to get an Afghan Id card, and a further two to get all the required documents for my wife.
I had to come back to Canada before the ministry of foreign affairs had stamped and registered my marriage certificate (Nikah Certificate) and now that I've received it, I see an inconsistency. My wife was born in Kabul, but in the marriage certificate it says another province and city, that of her father.
In Afghanistan, the paternal link is very important and people are usually associated with the province of their father.
The dilemma that we are facing is as follows: In the marriage certificate it says she was born in province X while she was in fact born in Kabul, all the other information are correct. Now this is something that happens frequently in Afghanistan but I'm not sure how that would impact the sponsorship application.
I spoke with my wife, my father in law and family members and they all told me that the marriage certificate is now registered in all government agencies and it's impossible to correct it.
Has anyone faced anything similar, will my application be rejected because of this? I'm very worries because its not really safe for her to remain there, life for women is very hard in Afghanistan, they are essentially bound to their houses and need their Husbands to pretty much do anything outside the house. I'm not comfortable leaving her there and am very worried. I want to get her to Canada as soon as possible.
Does anyone have any information they can share with me?
She has her Afghan Id card, passport, birth certificate (all with the same info ie: born in Kabul...) and we also have our marriage certificate as well as the Character Certificate.
Before sending the sponsorship application I wanted to be certain.
Secondly, I'm currently in Quebec but I'll be moving to Ontario when my wife gets here. I have the luxury of being able to work from anywhere, but my job is based in Toronto. For the past year and half I have been in in Montreal to immerse myself in the culture here, learn the language and explore the French side of Canada and thus I'm a Quebec resident.
Once my wife's case is processed we intend to live in Ontario and in one of the forms, I've indicated that we plan to live outside of Quebec. How will that impact the sponsorship application, will she be processed by Canada or Quebec (Quebec has a huge backlog and a processing time of ~40 months vs ~10 months for the rest of Canada)
