Good morning everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. I wanted to share an update and seek some advice regarding my upcoming Oath of Citizenship ceremony.
I received my oath letter today, scheduling my ceremony for November 5th at 8 AM. Unfortunately, I have a pre-planned trip and won’t be returning to Canada until the evening of November 5th.
I reached out to the Niagara office to request a reschedule, but their response was quite firm, stating they wouldn’t accommodate my request. This seems to be a common experience based on other posts I’ve read. While I understand their policies, rescheduling flights for two people would be a significant financial burden.
Here’s the response I received:
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?
Would raising a web form result in a similar response?
From what I’ve seen online, the Niagara office tends to give the same blunt responses but might reschedule the ceremony if you miss it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

You have been sent a Notice to Appear for the Oath of Citizenship under sections 13.2(1)(b) and 23.1 of the Citizenship Act. Please note the Notice to Appear is not an invitation as there is no discretion on whether or not to attend. A request to reschedule a Citizenship Ceremony event is only considered under exceptional circumstances, i.e., death of an immediate family member, hospitalization of an immediate family member, or other situations of emergency/critical nature, etc. Each request must be made in writing and must be accompanied by supporting documentation, e.g., death certificates, doctor’s notes, departure and return airline tickets, or documentation to support the request, etc. Please note, airline tickets alone will not suffice. You must provide your reason to reschedule along with documents to support your reason.
