Hi all,

Hope everyone is doing good.

We are moving to Toronto in October on PR with our newborn son who is Irish citizen but he does not have Canadian PR (he will be traveling on ETA). I understand OHIP waiting period for PR card holders has been waived off because of COVID19. We will be sponsoring him once we are in Canada so he won't be getting OHIP immediately. Can someone suggest a good health insurance plan for him and if you have personal experience in using this policy?

Regards.

Policies are listed online they are just regular travel medicine policies that just covers emergencies. An example would be Manulife. Your child will only qualify for OHIP once he gets PR. The 3 month wait time may have returned by then. Sponosring a child was taking 5-11 months but it could take longer due to large backlogs in the system.

Hi folks,

I am planning to buy a health insurance from Cigna global for my baby as he is on a visitor visa with PR holder parents. Any feedback good or bad for this company?

It is a well known company. Most only get emergency coverage and pay for routine care. You can do some calculations and see whether it makes sense to have full coverage and pay for routine care.

Health is wealth; it is a common saying. When we maintain our health, we can get over any diseases and live a beautiful and robust life forever. We are giving protection to all the things in and around us by taking insurance, but we do not consider or give shelter to our lives. By protecting our life by taking insurance, we can reduce the expenses of treatment and get a better healthy life and live without fear. So all should carry health insurance as fast as possible

@RockyStar1985 Can you please provide feedback which insurance did you buy for your newborn? My brother's son is also in a similar situation, he is a USA citizen, was not issued a visitor record so unable to apply for the state health care. Meanwhile, we would like to apply for a private health insurance to him so as to cover any visits, vaccines, etc.

You will likely only be able to purchase emergency medical insurance and will have to pay out of pocket for routine visits. A private more comprehensive coverage policy may be available to purchase as an individual but will very expensive.

Thank you for the feedback.

For regular pediatrician visits like for vaccines etc, how much would be the out of pocket with the emergency medical insurance roughly?

You pay for regular visits. Those would not be covered by medical insurance. Ask your doctor for a fees list. General visit is probably $50-200 depending on reason. Also most children don’t go to paediatricians. Cost out medical insurance with Blue Cross, Sun Life etc.
