Hello...

I need some answers with regards to PGWP to help my sister make the right decision. My sister recently completed a year certificate study at Algonquin College in their International DEV AND SALE Business study program. Technically, she would have qualify for 1 year PGWP because of the 1 year study. However, she wants to go back to school for another 1 year program in Personal support Worker program.

My questions:
1. If she waits to finish with the Personal Support Worker study, which would have given her 2 years of study in both programs, can she apply for PGWP and get 3 years of PGWP if that ever possible?

2. Should she apply for the PGWP for the 1 year now before the 1st November IRCC new policy on PGWP comes into full effect?

Please I need any information that can help us make the right decision. Thank you

1. She can apply for PGWP. There are changes coming to PGWP but right now the IRCC states the combination of two program for length of permit. So could be 8+8 or 12+12 or 3 years. She will not know until approved. She will need to extend her study permit and show $21k plus tuition.
2. If she doesn’t want to take the second program then yes. If she wants to take a second program, has the funds and wants a longer PGWP then no.

This is her career choice so her decision.

If I am getting you right, it is possible to get 3 years of PGWP after having completed 2 separate certificate, however, IRCC will have to approve it.

How long should be the time differences between both studies. because currently she is back in our home country, whiles we are looking for another program for her to come and study.

So when did she finish program? Does she have TRV to re-enter? She cannot extend study permit outside Canada so would need to apply for a new study permit with PAL, admission and funds. She must complete both programs within two years of each other to combine programs.

Nothing about 3 years anymore on PGWP application. From IRCC:
If you completed more than 1 program

You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed must be

  • PGWP eligible and
  • at least 8 months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials) in length
You can’t get a PGWP if you already had one after completing an earlier program of study.

Yes, she has TRV to re-enter the country. She has not apply for PGWP yet and her current study permit will expire in January.
She has graduated from her first program so her permit automatically expires 90 days following program completion. When did she finish her program? If within 90 days then she can only extend her study permit within that time period and from within Canada.

Given she is not in the country to extend, doesn’t have admissions and probably cannot start program until January then I don’t think she will be able to combine two programs unless her program is 8 months.

Wow this is a lot of information and answers all my questions. The next program she will be applying for will be 8 months but i doubt if that will change anything with all the changes happening with IRCC. Thank you once more.

She completed on 22nd August.
So she needs admissions, pay tuition, show $21k and get back to Canada within 8 weeks to apply for extension. She must graduate by August to count the two programs toward a PGWP for the length of her 2 programs.

What program can you start in January and graduate by August?
