Hi everyone,

I got my PR in Sep 2019 and my PR is going to expire on September 25, 2024. I spent more than 3 years outside Canada because I had to take care of my close family member overseas. I have ties with Canada because my brother is working there (going to become a PR soon) and I want to be a permanent resident again. In the meantime, I want to travel to Canada again in November, 2024 because my brother and my Mom is there.

If I I cross the border via road on a private vehicle from US and enter to Canada sometime around September 20, 2024 and renounce my PR voluntarily at the border, will I be admitted to Canada as a temporary residence for a period of six months? and will that six months be counted from September 2024 (or) will they let me a temporary residence until my PR expiry date?

Alternatively, should I submit a TRV application if I want to travel to Canada in November 2024? Please let me know your thoughts. I read through the canada.ca website, but could not get a clarity. Any thoughts here would be very helpful.

You can also drive private vehicle without voluntary renounce your PR status (unless you are reported). The border officer might let you go after you explain what happened during your time overseas.

Btw, why don't you travel now, while your PR card is still valid? Depends on the provinces, some requires valid PR card to get certain ID.

As mentioned, you do not need to voluntarily renounce your PR status at the border. Unless, or until, your status is lost (renounced or revoked) you will be allowed to enter Canada as a PR.

You cannot get a TRV (or any other type of visa for Canada) whilst you are a PR of Canada. Makes sense, right? Only the PR Card expires; PR status does not.

When you say "...and I want to be a premanent resident again.", dose that mean that you will be prepared to remain in Canada after re-entering next month? Are you prepared to stay until you have the required days of residency (730 within each rolling 5 year window) to then apply for a renewed PR card?

Having your brother in Canada has no impact on your PR application. As an adult neither is your mother but it is also unclear if she is only a visitor or whether she has other status.
