Hi All, I am currently on a closed work permit (ITC - LMIA exempt) and got laid off. Now I have an opportunity to be self-employed and work on contract (not full-time employment) with a company in my home country. Can I do this work? Can you also share any relevant official link that addresses this situation?

The below link suggests that I can do remote work as an employee. But it is not clear if I can be remotely self-employed. Looking forward to your suggestions.

It's complex but a good rule of thumb would be if you are generating income in Canada and are required to pay taxes on that income, it's not allowed on closed work permit.

Thanks for your reply. Can you please clarify your suggestion based on taxes? I think taxes is baed on residency, could be different from immigration law. For example, if a foreign workers works in Canada for 1 month, then he/she might not have pay taxes in Canada as the duration is much lower in that country, but if not authorized to work, he/she is violating the immigration rules.
