Suggestions for purchasing health insurance while waiting for OHIP?

We arent moving back to Canada until June 2025. I'll have employment immediately as I work remotely. But with the waiting period required for OHIP eligibility, we're gonna need some sort of health insurance to get us through that period.

What options are out there that people have personally used and can vouch for?

If you are eligible for OHIP currently no wait time.

So here's the information from the OHIP site:
To meet the minimum qualifications you must:
  • be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
  • be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
  • make Ontario your primary residence

Hmm. Maybe I mis-read then. As far as I knew you weren't eligible for OHIP for 5 months after moving to Ontario? But I can't find where I got that information from, then.
You qualify if you will be in Ontario for the first 5 out of 6 months and 6 out of the next 12 months. You must also be eligible for OHIP. If you will be meeting these requirements you currently qualify right away. Would double check closer to the date. There used to be a 3 months wait period before you qualified but that was eliminated during Covid and nobody knows if it will ever return.

Ah! Appreciate the clarification. That makes more sense now. Hopefully they don’t go back to that - it makes little sense to make people wait for a benefit they are otherwise eligible for.

It was in place so people don’t come to/return to Ontario with the intention to access healthcare. If new arrival or have been living abroad you haven’t actually been paying into the system. Lots of new OHIP card owners or those who have reapplied for OHIP seek care in the first month in Ontario.

I think you can get in touch with a super visa insurance provider and they can answer your question more precisely and have options for you. If you want, you can simply search "parent super visa" to reach out to them.
