Hello everyone,

We have decided to withdraw our refugee status in Canada and now planning to go back to USA, we have been accepted for humanitarian reasons in the US.
My concern is, my wife and i are not from the US obviously BUT our three children are all US citizens, when we got into Canada our passports were taken away from us, but as i mentioned before all of my children are US citizens. Will my wife and myself have any issues getting our passports back and going back into the US? Do we have to go back to our home country and fly to the US from there? My children already have the US passport but my wife and i DO NOT have our passports.
Please help us! Any information will be truly aprecciated. Thank you

Your passports will only be returned to you as you are boarding a flight to leave Canada. Generally speaking, this would be a flight taking you back to your home country. I don't know if it's possible to make arrangements for the destination country to be the US. Wait for others to comment.

its a fact for US passport holders they can return if they are flying to the US but for others, they will release passports if they are travelling back to their home country in simple and straight either you know many people can go here and there and abuse things.:)

What if we go to our home country embassy here in Canada and get brand new passports and just go to US, is that a way to make it easier?

I think this depends on your county of nationality. Some will not issue passports if you are out of status or require an expired passport to renew. Do you know the requirements to get a new passport issued in Canada? I would look into that.

if you can enter the US with just your passport then you can try but it won't be easy to explain to the US border what you were doing in ca etc however if you have been issued a green card or something then all good .. either think about how you can enter in other country with just your home country passport. and what you can explain what you were doing in CA

That is not necessary provided you have immigrant status in the US, request your passport back and make ticket arrangement. If you are crossing land border, you can request to be picked up from border point

Thank you everyone for your answers! As an update; i have called my home country embassy and they actually CAN provide my wife and i with brand new passports, so what do you recommend? I will soon have my documents from US which are enough to go through customs. Should i withdraw our refugee petition or hust leave and go to US? Thank you all so much

Applying for a passport will lead to re-availment and you’ll be inadmissible once process complete, on your previous post, you said you’ve decided to withdraw your refugee status, Assuming you already did, if not step one will take care of that.

Either way, you will need to contact CBSA for exit arrangement, but this time you have travel documents which may be intercepted at the border if coming from outside of Canada.

So if i understand you right, Canada Post may intercept my travel documents? You got me confused and scared! Please explain. Thank you

If your passport is coming outside of Canada, there is possibility it will be intercepted by CBSA during customs clearance. Usually passport has chip reader that will be detected on a machine. If they run your name on database, and notice you are/were refugee claimant they may start cessation process.. these are likely outcome

OUR passports won't be coming from outside Canada, just the documents we need to get back to US. That is our concern, either get new passports or withdraw the refugee petition. What would be easier? Thank you!

Jesus on a stick . Then what’s the issue ?
You have a way to get new travel documents. You said so yourself. Get them and leave . You leave and abandon your claim.

Whats easier ? Make a decision for the love of Jesus . Make a DECISION

We are not the ones that made a claim here and all the time had a claim burning on the stove in the USA.
You go to the USA, Canada is out of the picture . Put two & two together
