As a student hailing from India, I recently sought a visitor visa to attend an AI conference in Canada. Unfortunately, my application was declined, citing a lack of satisfaction with my responses to the application questions. The refusal letter did not provide specific details regarding the reasons for the rejection, leaving me uncertain about where I might have erred in my application. As a research student who may need to visit Canada again in the future, possibly by the end of this year or the next, I am keen to understand the possible reasons for the refusal and seek guidance on how to acquire further information. Additionally, I'm eager to learn about key considerations for future visa applications to Canada to ensure a smoother process. Any insights or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Letter contain following details.

Thank you for your interest in coming to Canada. I have reviewed your temporary resident visa (visitor visa) application and supporting documentation to assess whether you meet the requirements for a visitor visa (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/visit-canada/eligibility.html). This includes assessing whether you are coming to Canada temporarily for the reason(s) you describe in your application. I have determined that your application does not meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) (https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/I-2.5/index.html) and Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) (https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/sor-2002-227/index.html). I am refusing your application.
• I am not satisfied that you have truthfully answered all questions asked of you.

I am currently a PhD student at one of the premium research institute in India. I applied for 10 day visa around the time of conference. I got a funding support from my Institute for almost 3k CAD on top of that I showed my FD, mutual fund investment and saving balance >8K CAD.(I have shown supporting document for all of them). As invitation letter I did provided the official letter from the conference along with the registration details. Previously, I did traveled to Switzerland (in 2020) however, I got stranded because of covid and had to apply for D visa. However, I have provided a letter from Indian embessy (issued in 2020) mentioning the border close issue and complete mail thread of my communication with swiss immigration department as additional document in the application.

Order GCMS notes. Your reason for refusal is that they think you didn’t answer questions truthfully.

8k is not a lot of funds but proof that you had a grant to help cover a large portion of your costs. Did you check off that you had been refused a visa before or overstayed? It sounds like the situation in Switzerland may be considered like a refused visa but you had not checked of no when asked if you have been denied a visa in the past. Agree that GCMS notes should give you more details about the refusal.
