Can you please assist with identifying options of how a 15-year old can come to study in a mid- or high school in Canada (Alberta specifically). Are there any private options, and how does the process work?

The child in question is currently in Ukraine and does not have any prior visas or paperwork. CUAET program has expired and is no longer an option, so we are looking at a study permit.

Thank you.

You may want to post to this FB group since this deals with someone coming from Ukraine: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3148765652075065

Otherwise, if this student is going to follow the regular student visa process, the first step is to find a school in Alberta who will accept then and also identify someone who will act as their guardian while they are studying in Canada.

Then you would need to submit a study permit. The person sponsoring the application (likely the parents?) will need to show a bank balance of at least $25K to cover tuition and living expenses for a year. This is how the normal process works.

Thanks so much for the immediate reply, scylla! I appreciate the process explanation. It would be me being a guardian and a sponsor.

If there is anyone who can recommend a school, based on their personal experience, this would be fantastic. I have also started inquiries with local school boards.

Who can attend which school is typically by district. So assuming you are already living in Canada (which you would have to be in order to be a guardian), you need to research which high schools are in your district based on your home address.

Yes, a citizen of Canada, Just not sure if all schools can accept international students and provide paperwork for a study permit.

My daughter goes to a charter school, but there is a waiting list there for Canadian students, so not sure if they would even consider an international student.

You'll need to ask the school.
