Getting a new SIN

I am a new PR and I do have a SIN starting with "9" already because I worked and studied in Canada before. Where should I go to get a new SIN? Do I have to provide a Canadian address? What should I provide?

Go to the nearest Service Canada to get your permanent SIN. Provide proof of PR, either COPR or PR card.

You can also apply online, it takes about 7-10 days to get the hard copy in your mail.

I applied for SIN application online. I got an email confirming they have received my application with a SIN application number listed. They said within 5 business days, I should get a second email. Today is the 5th business day, but I haven't received anything yet. Also, I believe I cannot register an account on the MSCA unless I know it is processed. Any other guidance how I can check the status of my application ?

Usually after submitting the application, you get your SIN in the mail (1-2 weeks later). I don't recall getting a second email.

But you can arrange to have a SIN starting with a "9" while you are outside Canada.
