Hello,

I am currently holding a closed work permit until 2025, and I am living in Canada. My child is 15 years old, and he is living at my home country. Does my child need to apply for a study permit to study high school here (for more than 6 months) in Canada? Or a visitor visa is enough? And if he does need a study permit, Can I apply online for him?

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your help! I have one more question, Does my child need to apply for visitor visa before applying for study permit? Or the visitor visa will be granted once his study permit application is accepted?

When applying outland, the visa application is already included. Usually, you would know that you were approved once you get PPR.

No. DLIs are for post secondary.
It might only be necessary for post secondary, but when we applied for a high school SP, in my research I found that all public and private primary and high schools are designated as being DLI's in most if not all provinces, I didn't check them all.

I went to the district school board to get a "letter of acceptance" which I used to apply for my son's SP. Although, it's not required.
I did as well and got one but I didn't know it wasn't required, was your son in primary or high school? The forms for a SP seem to be geared more towards post secondary but I think it would be prudent to at least check with the school district to be sure and confirm they will take the person as an Intn'l Student and it might be beneficial for the SP application process.

My son was in high school. Yes, I agree to contact the local school board first. Actually, my initial purpose was just to ask them for the process of enrolling international students. After they explained, they asked me if i want to enroll my son. Took them just about an hour to get everything set up and provide me with the LOA.

Not sure if it made the application faster or easier, but at least I was able to upload an “LOA” for my son.

Thank you guys so much for your help. I've just have another question about this procedure,

I'm trying to apply SP online for my son, but there is no required document for fingerprint or medical exam in the document list. Does my son need to go to a visa office in my country for Fingerprint and medical exam? And if yes, how can I link the fingerprint and medical exam to the online application?

Biometrics are required for TRVs for people between 14-79 years old, it is done during the application process, after the app is submitted IRCC will send a biometrics instruction letter to the applicant who will then give them at any VFS office, who then submits them to IRCC If the planned study is for more than 6 months a medical is required, this can be done before the app is submitted, most people do it this way. Or you can wait for a request from IRCC during the processing. This has to be done by a panel physician who submits it to IRCC. You can read more about it here:
