Good question. I think the only option here is to put in the return date as the date you are submitting the application because you have to put in a date to advance further in the application. I hope doing that and just adding in writing of the situation will be good enough... would like to hear of others' experience with this.
and that in my opinion would be an issue even if you explain that via an LoE. I am not an expert that is why I asked @YVR123 that question

I was a little bit concerned about this too. But then what do you do in a situation like this. Whether it's a paper or online application we still have to inform them somehow via written context. Because I don't think there is also any rules or guidelines that states one cannot be out of country to apply so it doesn't make sense. They really don't do a great job with all of these applications in explaining more in complete detail.

If anyone out there has any experience with this it'd be great to hear about it!
