Hi, I am a PR of Canada and my status will expire in a year. I'm sure my citizenship application will still be processing at the time since the wait time seems long at the moment so if that is the case then how do you go in and out of Canada without any status because I'm sure it wouldn't be as simple as just letting them know that you're waiting for your citizenship approval..

Your status DO NOT change with an expired PR card.
If you meet RO and are inside Canada, you can apply for PR card renewal.

You will need a valid PR card to travel by air back into Canada. Again, having an expired PR card does not mean you lost your status. Unless your PR status is revoked, you are still a PR. (that's more on if you meet your RO)

People renew their PR if they still want to go in an out of Canada and citizenship application is still in progress.

Currently 2023 are seeing a short processing time of 3 months for getting citizenship. If you apply now you should have it before your PR expires.

It's not my PR card that expires, it's my status because I currently live outside Canada and in about 1 year I will have surpassed the amount of days I am supposed to be in Canada.

Do you still meet RO? If so, apply to renew your PR card when you are back in Canada. You may or may not get the card but you need to continue to meet your RO until you get your citizenship. (I believe)

When did you apply for citizenship?

Here is the link for June 2023 applicants:

Thank you! My challenge is that I live outside of Canada currently and will be applying for citizenship online in the next day or 2. Does RO stand for residency obligation? If so, in about exactly one year I will not have met the requirements for my days present in Canada which is why I was saying I will be losing my status, if that makes sense?

Yes. You should avoid that. Hopefully you can still meet your RO when you get your citizenship.

Definitely. Off topic here, but it IS ok to apply from outside Canada correct? I've lived abroad for a little while but I still meet my 1095 days present in Canada in the last 5 years. And I will continue to remain abroad until I get called for my citizenship test.

You can apply for citizenship online outside. I don't see any requirement to apply inside (unlike PR card renewal)

For citizenship application, an applicant needs to include information about physical presence, which includes list of absences. Now if the applicant has not returned from their last trip from overseas, will the system allow the application to be submitted ?
I have no idea about online application, because I applied for citizenship on paper back in 2021.

Good question. I think the only option here is to put in the return date as the date you are submitting the application because you have to put in a date to advance further in the application. I hope doing that and just adding in writing of the situation will be good enough... would like to hear of others' experience with this.
