Day visit to Canada from the USA

I recently made a day visit across the US border into Canada at Sault St. Marie. I was admissible (no criminal record) but I got pulled into secondary when I told the officer that I was going to spend a few hours in Sault St. Marie Canada and then return to the USA. My question is, does Canada frown on US citizens making a day trip over the border because of no specific destination versus a US citizen with a specific Canadian destination (prepaid hotel accommodations, etc.)?

Day trips are common at some border crossings (near Niagara falls for example.)
I'm not sure about the one at Sault Ste. Marie, but it may be uncommon there to raise some suspicion, or the office could have been very bored.

More often than not secondary inspections are random.

A lot of Canadians do day trips to the US for shopping, not sure how common it is coming into Canada. I don't think it's frowned on and don't hesitate to do it again. As @eccv said, probably boredom or random secondary inspection.
