Apply visa for my children to come to Canada

Hello folks,

I'm a work permit holder living in Canada now (Closed work permit - valid until 2025). I have a plan to bring my son who is 16 years old to Canada to study secondary school here, so I will have more chance to take care of him. Should I apply for the study permit outside from Canada for him, or should I apply for a visitor visa for him to come here first, and then appy for a study permit?

For more information, my wife hold a valid visitor visa and she is in Canada with me as well. My child will travel here alone by himself. Please let me know if this information can change anything on the process of applying study permit/visitor permit.

Study permit is now the preferred application if your son wants to remain in Canada
