The right time for changing my status from study permit to open work permit

Hi there,

I am an Iranian PhD student, and I want to quit university because of financial problems and apply for an open work permit. My question is: Is it necessary to apply for an open work permit before quitting university? Or can I apply for it after quitting and within the 90 days I have until the study permit expires automatically?

On what basis are you applying for the open work permit?

Recently, Canada has allowed Iranian temporary residents in Canada to:
- extend their current temporary resident status
- change their temporary resident status, for example, from a visitor to a worker.
- apply for an additional open work permit or study permit
for free until February 28, 2024.

Recently, Canada has allowed Iranian temporary residents in Canada to:
- extend their current temporary resident status
- change their temporary resident status, for example, from a visitor to a worker.
- apply for an additional open work permit or study permit
for free until February 28, 2024.

Apply for the open work permit but remain in school as a full time student to make sure you don't lose your status in Canada. Once the open work permit is approved, you can then stop attending school.
