Thanks for your response, Also I have a follow up question. I own a small business and run payroll on my name, thus I am the employer and I am the employee. Can I claim unemployment Benefits in this scenario

You pay yourself correct? If yes how can you claim EI?

Well its not a fraud, I would argue that, the reason being, I had a contract and paid EI insurance for last 24 months and also payroll taxes, now the contract is ending, So, I am figuring out if I would be able to claim EI benefits till the time I find another role.

The short answer is no.

See the link I provided. This scenario doesn't qualify for EI benefits for those who are self-employed.

If you created a LLC and registered under the State or Federal and ran a payroll to pay yourself , as a Company you will need to fire yourself, inform & do the necessary paperwork with CRA. Only then as an employee you will be eligible based on your income and monthly EI payments.

I also assume you are paying yourself as a Fixed permanent employee through your company and file T4 and you will need to follow the company/CRA procedures to lay off yourself. You can also stop your payroll for the time you find another contract but need to keep all your Employer/employee filling with CRA clean. You never know which comes and hits you in the future. Good Luck !
