Hi! During my PhD studies (at a univeristy in Brazil), I had the opportunity to conduct part of my research in a Canadian university. I wanna make sure this counts as a canadian work experience, for CEC.

Details: job position - education researcher/research assistant, full-time work, one year continuous experience, with LMIA-Exempt Work Permit. My employer was the Canadian university, as stated in the WP. I know also they would provide me a reference letter. In my work permit says "research award recipient"

The thing is, although I was an employer at the Canadian university, my university in Brazil was the one paying me (paying the award). I wonder if this invalidate the experience.

I know student work doesn’t count as work experience for CEC, but I’m mostly finding things about being a student IN Canada, which is not my case. Like, the link says "
To be considered under the Canadian Experience Class: You cannot count work experience you gained while enrolled as a full-time student. Your work experience must have been gained while on a valid work permit, such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit."

Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you get a T4 to file taxes? You need to show that you are an employee of the Canadian university.

I didn't get it. Cause the Brazilian University/Funding Agency was the one paying me. On my work permit says tho that my employer is the Canadian university.

Submit then with what you have but read the instructions.

Principal applicants are requested to provide documentary evidence of their work experience in Canada through a combination of: a copy of their most recent work permit (unless they are work-permit exempt), copies of their most recent T4 tax information slips and Notice of Assessment (NOA) issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or a sufficient combination of other supporting documentation, and employer letters of reference for all periods of qualifying work experience claimed in the application.

Canadian employers are responsible for deducting and remitting to the CRA Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, Employment Insurance (EI) premiums, and income tax from remuneration or other amounts they pay to their employees. They must also provide employees with a record of their remuneration and deductions in the form of a T4 tax information slip. The T4 slip is therefore key documentary evidence for the vast majority of CEC applicants to demonstrate that they were in an employer-employee work relationship during their period of qualifying work experience in Canada.

But now I just read the next paragraph,

However, there is no obligation under the regulations that CEC applicants provide a T4 tax information slip or NOA specifically with their application, and these particular documents cannot be considered conclusive evidence or the only evidence accepted for the purposes of substantiating whether an applicant has qualifying Canadian work experience. As such, in the absence of a T4 tax information slip or NOA, documents which may help substantiate the applicant’s work experience in Canada could include a record or letter of employment from the Canadian employer, work contracts and pay stubs.

Still, wondering if with just the reference letter + WP I'd be able to try CEC.

So if you have a Record of Employment (will show that taxes were remitted) and pay stubs (again show that taxes remitted) then go for it.

A ROE is a must for Canadian Revenue Agency.
