Hi! So I have gotten admission in the same DLI for 2 different degree with a combined study period of 2 years. IRCC has issued me a visa for the same period. My LOA mentions that the study period is 2 years and about the 2 programs I am pursuing in sequence. Now the question is, do I need to apply for extension after I complete the first program?

When does your permit expire, if it's before the completion of your programs then yes, you will have to apply for an extension.
They have issued me my permit until 07/25 which is enough to cover both these programs. In reality, they are 1 year programs. They shouldn’t have issued me the permit for that period if I still have to extend it, right?

I am not even in Canada yet. My curiosity is the reason for this question!
Sounds like they did issue it for the time required for you to complete your courses. If all goes as planned it won't be an issue, if it doesn't then you can apply for an extension. Permits are usually issued for course completion date and then 90 days but that is not set in stone. There are reasons why it might not be for the full requested/required time frame like passport is not valid for the whole duration.

Right! Thank you for your assistance. Appreciate it :)

Hi Michaelofficial123, How do you know that your study permit has been issued until 07/25 if you haven't entered Canada as yet? I thought the study permit is issued at the point of entry. Is the validity of the letter of introduction the same as the length of the study permit? My letter of introduction states that it is valid until August 2027 even though my program is 2 years and starts this September .Will my study permit be issued for the same period? Really interested in learning about this. All the best.

Hi! Until now I have been assuming that the expiry date on my LOI would be the same as on the Study Permit. Since I hail from a country that requires IRCC to issue a visa sticker on my passport, the expiry date on that matches the LOI as well. So it’s all been a guess work. I will be travelling next week, so eager to check this!

It makes sense that you have 5 years validity. You originate from a country that does not require IRCC to issue you a sticker. You travel on eTA. Your expiry date on Study Permit would certainly be different.

It is extremely unusual to get admission in advance for 2 programs that you are planning on attending one after the other. First off approval so far in advance is unusual for schools but it is also unusual for schools not to want to see how you suceeded in Canada during your first degree before granting admission for a second degree. That is likely a concern for IRCC as well. They will likely want to see that you are studying successfully before granting an extension to complete the second degree. I would apply for an extension 6 months before your study permit expires.

Right! When is the right time to apply for an extension? 90 days from the end of first program or 60 days before permit expiry? In both these scenarios, my study permit would be active.
