Online application - Do I need to mail in my passport even though I submitted online?

All of my friends who applied with paper applications said at some point they had to mail in their passports. I already submitted scans of my passport for the online application, but would they still require me to mail it in at some point? I'm trying to plan a vacation and it would suck if I had to mail in my passport right as I am trying to travel abroad.

Mail in your passport? I've never heard of such requests. They can ask to send scanned copies of all pages buy I've not seen any ask for the actual passport.

Three of my friends had to actually mail in their physical passport, which was mailed back to them 6 weeks later. Not sure why.
