If you want to see (insanity)^infinity try interviewing for a tech position in bank. One of my friends showed me a JD and I was like what the heck the hiring manager is smoking. They have copied interview practices from FAANG and have unrealistic expectations and then cry about lack of talent.
I did lol. It's easier to get into FAANG than in a bank lmao. You have to know literally everything; with FAANG they are pretty open with what they will interview you on. I was supposed to know microservices, Python (memory leak, optimization, multithreads/multiprocessing), K8s, AWS... The job is using Informatica ETL nocode UI tool lmaaaao.

I had seen a screenshot that was being shared around where a job description was asking for 10 years of experience in a technology / tech stack that was launched like less than 4-5 years ago. Abundance of people has made hiring managers and recruiters feel like demigods.

Yes, IT or not, I want to study. I have a shitty Bachelor's with not that decent grades so I really want to study further and improve myself.

If you are from the IT field, do you have suggestions from me? I have devoured hours of youtube videos but they all of them seem click baity.

I landed here with my brother. He is on a study permit and his uni is in Toronto.. so he is way worse off than I am because he absolutely cannot move anywhere. But we are certainly considering to rent one place together. Get this though, he is living with his friends and paying approx 300 a month and I have a room of my own nearby in a TH and I am paying 800 a month, both all inclusive. Still cheaper than renting a house or an apartment. o_O

I am limiting myself to Toronto coz, first my younger brother is here, secondly I really want to study further and if I wanna do that, I have a lot of options in Toronto (i think) and third, its the winter, I dont have a car and its my first time here. I might not be in Toronto once it gets warm.

Honestly when it comes to opportunities in IT, I must start somewhere, right? I don't know anything about the industry but I am sure with some proper training and education, I will be able to find something for myself... right?

Thanks. I will be doing that once the winter is over. I did not know ON would be this bad before coming here. And people who have been here say it has gotten this bad only after the inflation and housing bubble post covid. Was manageable before.

I have been looking at Windsor too.

True that. I have never faced inflation or such direct impacts of interest rates like this. And the landlords are so greedy, even the ones without any monthly payments. They see rents going up and use inflation/interest rates as an excuse to do the exact same bull.

I am probably going to keep my expenses as low as possible, get a degree or something from here and get out no matter what. Even Alberta is going crazy from what I have heard.
My best advance as a new IT entrant is to look into Data Science. It's all the hype now and relatively easy to learn. The main programming language you'll need to know is python which I am still embarrassed to call a programming language given how easy it is to use :). If you can get into a decent MS program in Data Science that should serve you well in a couple of years. Good luck.

That's a terrible advise lol. Data Science attracts so many people right now that the probability of getting a job is minimum. The good DS jobs require one to have a strong knowledge of math and statistics. On top of that, DS is slowly going away. Companies realized that it's mostly hype and thus, it's better to save money and hire data analysts.

Btw, what's wrong with Python as a programming language? I have never heard that ease of learning and using a language is the reason why it's an embarrassing language. I have built and deployed several major projects in Python and while it lacks certain features (multithreading is an example), it is rarely an issue in production. It's certainly beats Java in many aspects.

The only flame war left on this thread was "which programming language is the worst?"

Now i have seen everything (on this thread)

Python is an embarrassing language any way you wish to dice it :). My 12 year old nephew is currently learning it and building interesting things with it. I dare him to learn C, C++ or even Java. Maybe I am old school - I've been a programmer for about 23 years now - but I feel like python is a cop-out. It's a very versatile language with great integration and uses but it's not Java and cannot be compared in terms of resilience and stand-alone capabilites. Python works but relies on a plethora of libs and plug-ins. That's not necessarily a bad thing (in fact it's ease of use is a plus) but I still feel cheated about spending all those years learning programming from Fortrain and Cobol only for these new generation developers to get python, angular, jfiddle, swift, crystal and the likes :D.

Yes, I'm US visa exempt too. I guess I will just wait for my PR card and if I have any emergency travel, I would fly back to Seattle and cross the land border (I'm moving to Vancouver).
Thats good. Also, tickets are always cheaper in US. If you are visa exempt, don’t hesitate to take the two hour trip to SeaTac airport if you see cheaper flight tickets. SeaTac has moved to facial recognition (First one) immigration counters. So no wait times or answering humans.

Here is the fun part: None of those interviewers will be able to judge the person's abilities if a real FAANG engineer were to give a solution for say a design question.
One must understand that FAANG and Banks are simply solving two very different kind of problems. Having worked in both the places, I have learnt this : People get REALLY REALLY anxious if even very very rarely their money information is inconsistent while most people will not even bat an eye if Netflix movie stream crashed once in a blue moon. The solutions to both the situations are so different. One of europe's major bank, that I worked for, uses mainframes to carry out transactions for exactly this reason. They are reliable consistent performers even if they will never scale to so called "Amazon scale". Totally fine tool for the problem they have.

Really, they should not be testing these folks on questions pertaining to web-scale problems. Companies like Stripe have this thing figured out. They do not do this stupidity and need you to be crunchy with tech stack they use. Too bad they are laying off people right now.

You need to be more of a stats person to succeed in data science. I mean there are analyst positions for folks who just know how to write specific queries for specific data warehouse products, slice and dice the format of data and there are analysts who make models using data. One of these positions have a future. Other one will end up being rolled over by a query language powered by Transformer models like GPT (of ChatGPT fame).

You are right, and most of us are expecting this fate to befall us, but I don't know how else he can break into IT without having to go back to undergrad. Perhaps taking a course in Data Analysis or modelling? I dunno...

This is a lie most people tell themselves to justify their moving to ON :) . Tech jobs are everywhere, now more than ever.
That's the reality. Remote work is slowly going away (unfortunately) and we are going back to pre-COVID days. As much as I hate it, it starts being a limiter again.

It is :) Sorry for being blunt. The state of DS is awful; bunch of juniors from universities + bootcamp graduates + traditional stats and math grads + other STEM graduates. It's beyond ridic at this point. On top of that, companies realized that and started to invest more money into DE and software engineer with ML focus, making DS jobs fairly obsolete.

I started with C++ and worked with JAVA and currently work with Python. They are different languages for different industries. It's bizarre to compare them to each other.

Yup. Banks should also rebuild their interview process. The good part (the best?) about FAANG is the brand recognition. Google is Google, Meta is Meta. No one would go nuts if I have TD or RBC on my CV. However, having Netflix will increase my chances of getting a job in the future.

On top of that, it's a low and boring job. Anyone with a bit of programming experience will be able to ramp up.
