Hi,

I have a few question on my mind regarding citizenship application.

1. Are there any delays / indefinite holds if the person leaves Canada after applying for citizenship?
2. Is the minimum 3 years of filing taxes mandatory? What if they have filed for 2 years? They had not filed taxes, because, the next tax filing season is very far away. Do they need to wait?

1. Some are delayed, some are not
2. All numbers are absolute. Check the ircc website for the exact days for applying for citizenship and also the number of years for taxes
If you are short on anything they will reject your application. They can take a long time before they reject it. So it's better to wait until all requirements are met.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I have gone through the citizenship act document along with all the docs on ircc website.
Most certainly, there is a mention of 1095 days physically present in Canada. But the income tax requirement just states that - one needs to file income tax if required to. There is no "absolute" mention of minimum 3 years of filing income tax.

Here is the wordings:

they have used "May", not "Should" or "Must" (May need to file)

To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you:
  • must be a permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada
  • must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the 5 years immediately before you apply
  • may need to file personal income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period
  • must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (if you are between 18 and 54 years old when you apply)
  • must demonstrate you have knowledge of Canada and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship (if you are between 18 and 54 years old when you apply—this is assessed after you apply)
  • can’t have any unfulfilled conditions related to their permanent resident status
  • can’t be under a removal order
  • can’t be inadmissible or prohibited on criminal or security grounds

You should get your tax forms from your employer around the end of February, it's just 2 months away. And you can file right away and then appl for citizenship. Or you can apply for citizenship right now and see what happens.
There's no harm either ways but they can take years to review your application and then reject it and you'll have to reapply.
Or you can wait 2 months to have everything for sure.
If you have time to wait and experiment for sure you can go ahead lol
