My child was born outside Canada. I, my child and his mother (my wife) have obtained our canadian citizenship at the same time. I intend to apply for our passports through mail. For my child's passport application, do I need to send his original birth certificate as proof of parentage or a photocopy signed by our guarantor would suffice?

Thanks for your reply. The document checklist says:
Acceptable proof of parentage (see section K)

In section K, there is no mention of original or photocopy or if the original will be returned.

For my child, i had to submit original canadian birth certificate….each time.

My experience: applied in person with foreign birth certificate translation plus original. They definitely were not accepting copies. They returned all originals on the spot as done in person.

So personal view only: I would not submit original if it was only one.

(Note: 'duplicates' issued by the original issuing authority - as opposed to copies made by someone else - are almost always considered 'original' for these purposes. True for example of Canadian birth certificates. If you have extra duplictes and are willing to risk it, mail it. Otherwise I'd suggest applying in person)
