Hello everyone,

I have few questions and I hope someone can answer them.

My current status is a "Protected Person" and I applied for the PR, my application was received 2-March-2021 and i got the acknowledgement of reception with a temporary application ID. It's been 6 months and i still haven't received any updates, and i can't link the application to my GCKey account since it only has the temporary number. I emailed them but I'm not getting a response, and their phone number is unreachable.

My questions are:

How long does it take for the PR application to start processing after the acknowledgement of reception?
Are these 6 months part of the processes time?
How accurate is their estimate of 24 months to complete a PR application?
What would the next step be? is there anything else i need to do beside waiting for the final decision?

Many thanks

  • Your processing time starts the day they receive your complete application and ends when they make a decision.
  • Yes the month's counts
  • This processing time tells you how long it took IRCC to process most complete applications in the past 6 months. Your application may be delayed or returned if it’s not complete.
  • Nothing for you to do but wait, if you reach them by Webform they will just send a generic reply saying Covid affect processing blah blah blah.
  • My firend got a temp application number too Feb 17 and still waiting, i did not even know IRCC sent Temp number starting with X and cannot link it either i wonder why some get a regular number while some get temp number weird

you may remove the first x letter of your ID and try again.

as for your questions:
in most cases, 6-8 months, although some people have waited for longer
yes, it starts when they receive the complete application
not at all accurate, can be anywhere from 6 months to 30 months
they may ask you to submit everything again if there is any update, and medical if your medical has expired, you can request GCMS notes to see what's in your file but 6 months is a bit too short for that, I'd give them a few extra weeks.

it's for free if you do it under the Privacy Act.

Thank you!

Regarding the process time, if it stars the day they received it, why am i unable to link it to the GCKey account or even find the application status using their check_application_status tool? In the acknowledgement letter, it literally says this is not a confirmation of your application being in-process.

My friend tried removing the X and it did not work, did some googling!!! here is what i found.

How do I know the file number is temporary?
A typical temporary file number begins with the letter X. For example, XE123456789 refers to a temporary economic file number. When IRCC is ready to issue a permanent file number, they remove the X from the beginning. However, they sometimes issue a new number without an X in the front.

Why does IRCC issue a temporary file number?

Two potential scenarios could lead to issuing temporary file numbers:

  1. Your package is incomplete, and the processing is pending on receiving missing documents or payments.
  2. IRCC does not have the resources to process your application now. However, they want to issue an AOR, so you know they have received the application.
My clients have experienced the latter since the coronavirus pandemic. However, I have only seen temporary file numbers for in-paper applications. Keep in mind a temporary file number means IRCC has not initiated the processing of your application. Consequently, don’t give yourself high hopes at this time. I have another article that explains how you could check out the status of your application.

the processing time, which takes the waiting queue into consideration, starts at the day they receive it, but the process itself (where an officer starts to review your case) does not start on the same day
