Hi everyone,

We are applying for Supervisa for our mother, and we want to mention that she is a widow, and is living alone in India, which is difficult as she is growing old and we want her to stay with us.

We don't have any property and she is a retired NGO professional.

Thank you in advance.

So what is your questions. For supervisa, you need to meet LICO. She needs to buy one year of health insurance and completed the medical as well a showing ties to home country, travel history etc. It doesn’t need to be mentioned that she is a widow as it will be evident in the application. She should show what funds she has. It is still a visitor visa. You can issue letter of invitation stating those things but still must show that she is visiting an not moving permanently.

Sorry for the confusion.

We are not sure how to show ties to the home country. We have all the other things in order. Any suggestions?

Has she had a Canadian or US TRV? Ties to home country are usually - job, investment properties that require maintenance, 24/7 caregiver for a family member. If you meet LICO and she has travel history then ties are not as important.

Does she have property in India to return to? Any other children? Does she care for parents if they are alive? Does she have to return to collect a pension? Things like that. Although a supervisa now allows you to stay up to 5 years the 5 years is not guaranteed. For example if you get sick and are not able to secure supervisa insurance the next year then you can’t remain in Canada under a supervisa. Many plan on bringing their parents to Canada to visit under a supervisa and assume they will get selected via the PGP program during the 5 year stay and the parents will never leave. The demand for PGP spots is much higher than spots available and given the current crisis in our healthcare system there may be changes to PGP since it is never a guaranteed program. You need to have a plan B in case your mother needs to return home. This is why you have to show ties to your home country to be approved for a supervisa.
