Applying for PGWP with a 4 month gap

Hi all!

I would like some advice regarding my PGWP.

I am currently enrolled in a 1-year program at George Brown College. I just completed the first two parts and the last part is a Coop. My coop term would start next Monday (May 9th) at a big company here in Toronto, but they cannot have me part-time (since I don't have a valid coop work permit). They offered to have me on the fall term full-time.

To do that I would have to defer my Coop term for 4 months. Can I still apply for a PGWP after I complete my Coop?

I have applied to extend my study permit and to get a coop work permit on Feb 11th, even though the IRCC website says it would take 60 days, not it has been 84 days without a response.

Does your college have any rules regarding scheduled breaks? At some colleges, you have to apply for a scheduled break and then they can authorize your leave. IRCC says that an authorized leave can be taken if its below 150 days (might want to always keep check of the latest information though).

Thank you for your answer. I am not sure about the schedule breaks but nobody mentioned them to me. I have read somewhere about the 150 days.

I am really lost I cannot complete my program because of IRCC, and they might cause problems in the future because of the break I might have to take.

The scheduled breaks are specific to each college. Your college's website might have information on them. In order to apply for a scheduled break, you need to fill out some form issued by the college and send it to them. The form will be located somewhere within their website. Also before doing this, make sure that it's compatible with IRCC's regulations (most of the times it should be)

Also I'm confused by your original post. You said that you cannot be part-time right now for the co-op term, but you have to defer that co-op term to the Fall semester when you can be full-time?

So why not just be full-time right now? And do the co-op semester while being full-time?

I cannot start full-time because my coop work permit was not approved yet.

Per my study permit I am allowed to work only part-time.

It is unfortunate that your co-op employer will not allow you to work part-time (study permit) until you get your co-op work permit. Ask your school for official documentation that you are waiting on a work permit to complete your program. Break of 4 months should not be an issue for PGWP.

I applied for both together, SPE + Coop Work Permit. Not sure how long it was supposed to take. According to IRCC 60 days for SPE and 137 for initial WP, but I think my case fits better on the 60 days.

Two different processes so may be processed separately. Has your extension been approved?

Nope it wasn’t approved yet. No update whatsoever since the day I have applied on Feb 11
